those who knew her.â
Four hands went up immediately; after a moment he added his own. âYouâre right about one thing,â he said coldly, looking at Will. âI was her coach. Tessa?â
The doctor shrugged helplessly. âPossibly. Iâm not sure. I see a lot of patients in the course of a year. I donât remember the name. Where did she live?â
âThe family lived in the Midlands,â said Sheelagh. âI donât know where she lived in London â I had her number, thatâs all. Will, where was she when you knew her?â
The fury that had goaded him to pick a fight with a man he couldnât hope to beat had dissipated, leaving him subdued and a little sullen. âShe used to have a flat in Colliers Wood but she could have moved.â
âThen yes, itâs possible I treated her at some point. Iâve never specialized in sports medicine but I could have seen her as a GP. Iâm sorry I canât be more specific but I have a list of about two thousand patients at any given time and if I donât see somebody regularlyâ¦â Her voice tailed off apologetically.
Larry said, âFive yesses and a maybe. Joe?â
He took time to answer. âYes, I met her too. My daughter played some tennis â most of her friends were other players. We met quite a few of them over the years.â
âShe visited your home?â
âYes.â
Larry spread his hand. âThatâs it?â
Joe bristled. âWhat were you expecting? Itâs normal enough for kids to bring their friends home, isnât it?â
âJoe, thereâs nothing normal about any of this,â Sheelagh exclaimed impatiently. âTell us again how you heard about this course.â
He looked faintly embarrassed: âThere was a postcard tucked into a business magazine I still get. Offering stressed-out executives a psychological MOT. I thought, Why not â what harm can it do?â
There was a lengthy pause while the others pondered that. Then Tariq said, âSo probably all of us have known Cathy to some extent at some time. But so what? What does anyone hope to gain by bringing us together like this?â
It had taken Will almost till now to start thinking clearly again. To learn, this long after, new shocking facts about the death of a girl heâd loved had swept the feet from under him. It had also been a shock to find himself among people heâd previously known only by ill repute. And losing control had shocked him to his foundations: Will Furney never lost his temper, whatever the provocation. So it had taken a little time for him to get his head together again; but now the answer to Tariqâs question seemed obvious to him. âDoesnât it rather smack of grudge?â
âRevenge? For what?â
Will stared at him. âFor the fact that Cathyâs dead. She was twenty-six years old. She was beautiful and talented. She had everything to look forward to. But she drove her carââ His voice cracked on it; he had to swallow and try again. âShe committed suicide. Someone blames us for that. We donât know one another but someone knows us all. I think he blames us for her death. He wantsââ He fell silent.
âWhat?â asked Tariq.
Blinking, Will returned from a momentâs reverie. âI donât know. But thereâs something he, or she, wants very much. And it occurs to me to wonder if the lift going off when it did was only a bit
of forgetfulness after all.â
Chapter Eleven
âYou donât think this is getting a shade imaginative?â ventured Miriam. âIsnât the obvious answer also the most likely â that the silly sods downstairs forgot? Theyâre not used to having people up here.â
Will frowned. âThis is the first time youâve held a course in the hotel?â
She didnât react as if sheâd blundered. âIn this
