one out, knowing it was one of Frankieâs favorites. âWant to watch it on the big screen?â She nodded toward the TV.
Frankie looked at his mother beseechingly. âCan I, Mom?â
âI donât know if we can stay that long,â Pam said.
âLet him start,â Sierra said. âYou can always come back and finish another time.â
They left Frankie settled in watching Indiana Jones being chased by headhunters, and she and Pammie went back to the kitchen. Sierra poured them each a cup of tea.
âTell me what the doctors said?â
âThey said heâll be better than new.â Pam smiled as she echoed what Frankie had said moments before. âTruly, Sierra. They said if they get a match, heâs a great candidate. And because of you, heâs on the list. They are going to be doing tissue samples so they will know when a match exists. Theyâre testing me, of course, and my sister. And theyâll test Frankieâs father if we find him. Not that I think weâre likely to. Or,â she added grimly, âthat Dan would give one up if he knew.â
âOf course he would,â Sierra said. âFrankieâs his son!â
âAs if that ever meant a thing to him.â Pam gave herself a little shake. âIt doesnât matter. What matters is that out there somewhere thereâs going to be a kidney. Iâm sure of it. And Frankie will be well again.â She clasped her fingers together and looked heavenward. âPlease, God.â Then she looked at Sierra, her expression concerned. âAre you really okay here? I mean, itâs gorgeous and all that. Almost homey, even. But thatâs just the trappings. Is heâ¦is he good to you? I couldnât stand it if he wasnât good to you.â
Sierra took Pamâs hands in hers, smiling. âStop worrying. Heâs good to me.â
âBut can you make it work?â Pammie wanted to know. âReally? I know that you probably haveââ she blushed ââgreat sex. But what aboutâ¦about everything else? Dan and I had great sex,â she said grimly.
âNo. Itâs more than that,â Sierra assured her. âIt started that way,â she admitted. âAnd itâs crazy, the two of us are so different. Butâ¦weâre going on a honeymoon.â
Pamâs eyes lit up and she squeezed Sierraâs hands. âYou are?â she said eagerly. âWhen? Where?â
âI donât know yet. He hasnât said. Butâ¦he booked me out. Thatâs why I was off today.â
Pamâs eyes widened. âHe called Bruce and didnât even tell you?â
Sierra shook her head. âItâs like him. To do something like that spontaneously. In that way, I guess, we are alike.â She grinned. âHeâll tell me tonight. Heâll have to. Because he didnât tell me this morning and Iâm going to have to know. After all I went to work and found out Iâd been replaced.â
âWhoa! Really?â Pam looked worried.
âDonât,â Sierra said, before Pamâs natural instinct to think the worst could kick in. âYou donât know Wolfe. Thatâs the way he is. Peremptory. Cocky. Determined.â
âNothing like you.â Pam grinned.
Sierra laughed. âItâs why we strike sparks off each other, thatâs for sure. Heâll tell me tonight.â She hugged her arms across her breasts happily.
And then Pam smiled, too. âIâm glad,â she said and gave Sierra a quick hug. âYou deserve to be happy, Sierra. Nobody deserves it more.â
Â
Dominic had thought yesterday was bad.
Today was a whole lot worse.
Yesterday he hadnât been able to get Sierra out of hismind, but at least sheâd been at work where he knew he couldnât just walk in and grab her and haul her home to bed.
Today he knew she was home.
All day long. Or she would
