by the minutiae of life when we really shouldnât. Go, call him.â
âI donât know, Mum.â
âOK, then donât call him.â
I sit and ponder. Mum chuckles to herself. âPlease, sweetheart, just go and call him.â
âHow come youâre so wise, Mum?â
âIâm not that wise,â she admits. âOtherwise I would have seen this coming.â
âBut if there were no surprises I suppose life would be dull,â I say, reaching a rare moment of clarity.
âAnd life has always been about highs and lows. Go, call him, and Iâll be here waiting when you get back.â
âDad will get through this, wonât he?â
âYes,â murmurs my mother. âI think he will.â
I wind my way through the hospital corridors until I find myself outside once more and my phone starts chattering, announcing the arrival of a new message.
I know I should hate him, but HB is awesome. Cleared the backlog and baking up a storm. Think he might be innocent. Call me. Carly XXX
I hit the speed dial and wait for the familiar sound of my best friendâs voice.
âAny news?â she asks.
âDadâs still in surgery. Whatâs with the message?â
âI donât want to be seen as a turncoat but your boy turned up at the bakery and wouldnât leave. He just set up in the back and cracked on clearing the backlog and now he and the rest of his team are on an all-out baking assault. I think heâs innocent.â
âThatâs the general line of thinking,â I admit.
âBut what do you think?â asks Carly. âWhat does your heart tell you?â
âI was so angry with him before.â
âBut thatâs before you knew the truth. What about now?â
âIâve been trying not to think about it.â
âYouâd better start considering it because weâre about to leave.â
âYouâre coming here?â I say.
âYes. Iâd like to say more but itâs probably best you see it, really.â
âI donât understand.â
âYou will soon enough,â she says.
Carly hangs up, leaving me curious. I donât have to wait long. The truck is a monster, easing its way into the hospital entrance. An army of helpers disembark from a fleet of support vehicles and then they start unloading.
âCrazy, isnât it?â remarks Carly, appearing out of the chaos.
âI donât understand.â
âItâs a full-scale cake assault. Weâve been baking all afternoon. HB put the word out and it wasnât long before every other bakery in the county was in on the programme.â
âWhat programme?â I ask.
âI guess itâs like feeding the five thousand but with cake,â she suggests as we watch tray upon tray of cupcakes being unloaded and delivered to the hospital to be distributed to staff and patients alike.
âWhoâs funding this?â I ask.
âIt seems that HB has very deep pockets,â remarks Carly, spying the man himself coming through the crowd. âI think I see a crate requiring delivery.â And she eases herself out of the way.
âWhat is this?â I ask.
âPenitence, maybe?â suggests Matt.
âBut you didnât do anything wrong, did you?â
âI seriously misjudged her. I should have sent her away the moment she arrived but I thought I could protect you.â
âYou should have just told me.â
âI know,â he says. âIâm so sorry.â
âIâm sorry too.â
âYou have nothing to be sorry for,â Matt tells me.
âI turned and fled like a coward. I didnât give you the opportunity to explain.â
âYou had far more important issues to deal with.â
âI guess.â
âHow is he?â
âHeâs still in surgery.â
âI can offer you a cupcake.â
âWhat flavours do you
