them after your friend?â Travis asked. âThat they were supposed to kill him?â
âThatâs what I want to find out.â
âSo thatâs why weâre followinâ him and not tryinâ to ride him down.â
âRight.â
âWell, thanks for tellinâ me.â
âIâve been busy convincing myself,â Clint said, âso I suppose weâll see when we get where weâre all going.â
THIRTY-ONE
âYou know what Iâm still tryinâ to figure?â Hastings asked Tom Barry.
âWhat?â
âWhy you decided to hit that saloon.â
Barry gave Hastings a momentary glance, then looked straight ahead.
âI told you,â he said, âI figured there was some money there.â
âMore than four thousand, right?â
âA lot more.â
Hastings fell silent.
âWhy?â Barry asked. âWhatâs your problem?â
Hastings hesitated, then said, âYour research is usually a lot better than that.â
âEverybody makes mistakes.â
âNot you, Tom,â Hastings said, ânot unless you want to make a mistake.â
âWhataya gettinâ at, Tracy?â Barry demanded.
âNothinâ,â Hastings said, âIâm just wonderinâ, thatâs all.â
âWell, stop wonderinâ,â Barry said. âThatâs my advice to you.â
âSure, Tom,â Hastings said, âwhatever you say.â

They were ten miles from Fort Worth when Tom Barry suddenly changed direction.
Hastings noticed it, but did not speak until they had gone a few miles.
He reined in.
Barry continued on for a few yards before he stopped and turned.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhataya mean, âwhatâs wrongâ?â Hastings asked. âWe ainât headed for Fort Worth anymore, Tom, thatâs whatâs wrong.â
Barry rode back to stand beside Hastings.
âWhatâs goinâ on?â Hastings asked.
âYou wanna go to Fort Worth, go ahead,â Barry said.
âI ainât sayinâ that,â Hastings responded. âJust give me some idea what weâre doinâ, Tom. Or if youâre gonna try to kill me like the others, go ahead. Draw down. Do it now.â
Tom Barry stared at Hastings.
âI ainât gonna kill you, Tracy.â
âThatâs good to hear,â Hastings said, âbut where the hell are we goinâ?â
âJust follow me,â Barry said. âIâll tell you when we get there. Howâs that?â
Hastings hesitated.
âJust stick with me.â
âYeah,â Hastings said after a moment, âokay. Go ahead, letâs go.â
âYou wonât be sorry.â
They started off again and rode the rest of the way in silence.

They bypassed a town called Liberty, and Hastings didnât question Barry again. As they approached a ranch, Hastings had an idea of what was happening.
âThis is a big spread,â he said.
âYeah, it is.â
âSomebody who lives here has a lot of money.â
âYeah, he does.â
âSo thatâs it?â Hastings asked. âYou got hired to do this?â
âYeah, I did.â
âThatâs why you never seemed that upset about the four thousand,â Hastings said. âYouâre gettinâ paid for this.â
âWeâre gettinâ paid for this, Tracy,â Barry said. âThereâs two of us.â
âHow much?â
âWait and see, my friend,â Barry said. âWait and see. Come in, the man is waitinâ.â
THIRTY-TWO
âHere,â Travis said.
Clint rode up alongside the younger man and looked down at the ground.
âThey changed direction here,â Travis said.
âSo theyâre not going to Fort Worth.â
âLooks like it.â
âWhat are they up to?â Clint asked,
