missed my chance to leave?â
âCouldnât you just leave without a boat?â
Jack turned to Danielle. By his expression, it was obvious he thought her question absurd. âHow would I do that? I was on the bottom of the ocean.â
Danielle shrugged. âI donât know. You got there some way.â
âWell I didnât know how to do that,â he said, sounding annoyed. âBut when the sun came up the next morning, I imagined the Eva Aphrodite afloat againâback on top of the waterâtaking me home.â
âYou harnessed your energy?â
âWhat does that mean?â
âSpirits can sometimes harness their energy and move objects. You obviously moved the boat from the bottom of the ocean and brought her here.â
Jack let out a sigh. âPerhaps, but when I was on the boat, I could never get anything to move. And since Iâve arrived back at Frederickport, nothingâI havenât been able to move a speck of sand.â
âI imagine you used up your reserve. Getting that boat up off the bottom of the ocean and then bringing it here, it probably required all the energy you amassed in the last 90 years.â
I an stood at the living room window, staring across the street at Marlow House. Lily had arrived a few minutes earlier, but had immediately excused herself to use the bathroom.
âYou want to go get something to eat?â Lily asked when she entered the living room a few minutes later.
Ian turned from the window and faced her. âWho in the world is Danielle talking to?â
Lily frowned. âWhat do you mean?â
âSheâs been standing across the street talking to herself for the last five minutes.â
Lily walked to Ian and looked out the window. âUmm, sheâs probably on the phone.â
Ian shook his head. âNo she isnât. Sheâs not holding her cellphone. And the way she keeps moving her hands around, itâs like sheâs talking to someone.â
âBecause she is,â Lily insisted. âSheâs talking to someone on the phone. She obviously has earphones on.â
Ian looked again and shook his head. âNo she doesnât. I donât see any wires.â
Lily grabbed Ianâs hand and pulled him away from the window. âOh, youâre just being silly. Of course, sheâs on the phone. Sheâs using one of those wireless earphone thingies.â
âWhen did she get one of those?â
Lily shrugged. âI donât remember. Sheesh, Ian, you think Danielle has finally gone over the edge?â
âYouâre right she probably is on the phone. But considering all the crap sheâs been through this last year, I wouldnât blame her.â
Lily stood on her tiptoes and brushed a kiss over Ianâs cheek.
He smiled down at her. âLet me go change and we can go grab something to eat.â
âOkay, sounds good.â
Ian headed for the hallway and then paused. He looked back to Lily. âDo you think we should ask Danielle to go with us?â
âOh heck no. That girl is nuts.â
Ian just laughed and continued to the hall.
After Lily heard Ian shut his bedroom door, she pulled her cellphone from her pocket and sent Danielle a quick text message: Go into the house. You look crazy talking to yourself. People can see you!
Chapter Thirteen
W hen Danielle and Jack entered the front door of Marlow House a few minutes later, Walt was standing in the entry hall, waiting for them. Jack froze the moment he saw Walt.
âI see he agreed to come back with you.â Waltâs expression was no friendlier than it had been the last time Jack had come to Marlow House.
âWalt doesnât seem happy to see me.â
Danielle shut the front door. âThatâs not true; Walt wanted a chance to talk to you again.â
âIf that was true, why didnât Walt just come down to the beach and get me
