new designs. Everyone worked long hours to get ready for the trade show that was less than two weeks away.
“I’ve scheduled outside photographers and a new advertising agency to do the campaign.”
One of her designers, a hipster in his late twenties who had numerous body piercings and tattoos, asked, “We have our own marketing department. Are you going to outsource their jobs?”
Emilia created an atmosphere of open communication and encouraged each member of the team to share their thoughts or concerns. She had hired a new designer to replace someone who couldn’t adjust to the changes.
Looking around her small group, she said, “I know I’ve asked you to embrace many changes. The fact that we are sitting in a conference room with blanked out windows, a white noise machine, and a locked door is a radical departure from how things were done. But we are trying to rescue Berceto from either a buyout or being forced out of business by our creditors. It’s a big deal that we can’t afford to pay all of our bills.”
Emilia stood up and began pacing the room, and someone else said to her, “I understand why you want secrecy, but most of the employees would do anything for this company. They wouldn’t reveal our new designs.”
“I agree. But the culture of this place over time shifted to not taking risks and not valuing innovation or new ideas. I plan to reveal the designs to the employees the night before the launch to create excitement. They need to be re-energized and to believe that the company can succeed.”
“Do you plan to outsource marketing?” It was a small company, and she knew Aiden was engaged to Anita in marketing.
“I know you must be worried about Anita and the rest of the marketing staff, but I can’t tell you what the future will hold. I’m not a marketing expert, but as a designer, I haven’t been satisfied with how the designs are showcased or promoted. Using an outside agency for this launch allowed me to dictate what I needed without dealing with resistance.”
Aiden nodded, saying, “I get it.”
“I have a few meetings to attend, but keep in mind that we will need to be ready by tomorrow morning to begin photographing.”
Leaving the conference room, Emilia went in search of her father. The tension in the air was palpable. The old-timers were upset that they were being excluded from the process.
She had asked for several changes to the production room, but nothing had happened. She needed to speak with the general manager, but the disagreeable man was out again. Walking by, she smiled and said good morning to several people who looked up from their work. Business was slow and they couldn’t keep everyone busy.
Meeting with her father, they went over the numbers. She sat back and tried to relax the knot of tension in her stomach. The numbers were problematic.
Her father remained positive and pointed out small successes. He had quietly supported her through the last several weeks.
Standing up and smoothing down her grey skirt, she said, “I’m going to meet with Alex this morning. I think he may be able to help with negotiating a better price for diamonds.”
After countless hours reviewing the financials, she knew that layoffs were inevitable unless she was able to work a miracle.
“Lia, we can’t do anything without sufficient capital. We need Alex Armati on our side. Without a major influx of capital, we won’t be able to purchase in sufficient quantities.”
She thought about his concerns. They found a better location and a building for a much lower cost. But for Berceto to purchase the new building and have money for renovations, they needed an investor. But she wasn’t convinced that Alex Armati was that person. He wanted fifty percent of the company.
After a few more minutes of discussion, she went back to her small office to check email. She had several requests for interviews which she forwarded to Liv.
An older employee knocked on her door.
