and stalked off.
âWhatâs wrong with him?â I asked Monet.
âNo idea,â she said.
I shrugged. âNothing can get to me today. You were right. Going out with Tanner was smart.â
âHeâs a nice guy.â
I shrugged. âHeâs certainly good-looking, and that is definitely helping me get back on top.â
âI didnât set the two of you up so that you could use him to become popular again.â
âSo why did you?â I was annoyed. Monet was acting as though I was committing a crime or something. âIâve never made a secret of the fact that I like being liked.â
âBeing popular doesnât necessarily mean youâre liked,â Monet snapped.
âWhat are you talking about?â The idea stopped me in my tracks.
âAsk yourself why being popular is so important to you.â
Ava came over. âMonet, where should I put this?â She had a painting of a Tuscan villa in her hands.
âAva, thatâs gorgeous,â I said.
âThanks,â she said. âI painted it from a photo I took when we went on vacation there last summer.â
Mr. Fanelli clapped his hands. âAll right, places, everyone. And remember, people, you need to be off book. Youâve had four weeks to memorize your lines. Iâm going to start imposing fines on Monday.â
Most of the cast groaned, but I smiled smugly. I had a gift for memorization and had both Bianca and Katharina down cold.
âSophie, Dev, where are you? Iâd like to work with the two of you.â
âIâll get him.â I finally found Dev in the closet where the crew kept the supplies they needed to design the sets. I observed him for a minute as he hoisted cans of paint onto the shelf. The muscles in his arms rippled. Just then, he turned around and caught me staring.
âFanelli wants us,â I said.
âIâll be right there,â he said.
I hesitated. âDid I do something wrong?â
âNo.â
âBecause youâre acting like youâre mad at me about something.â
Dev ignored the question. âCâmon, Fanelli is waiting.â
âLet him wait. You didnât answer my question.â
âSophie, why do you have to be like this? Just when I think Iâ¦â His voice trailed off.
âYou what?â I said. Butterflies were building in my stomach. âWhat, Dev?â
âNever mind,â he said. âIâm not in the mood to stand in line to worship the great Sophie Donnelly.â
âNobody asked you to,â I snapped.
Monet poked her head into the room. âMr. Fanelliis asking where you two are,â she said. âHeâs almost at the hissy-fit stage. Heâs muttering something about spoiled little prima donnas.â
âWe all know who heâs talking about,â Dev said, shooting me a glare. He strode off.
âYour brother has a serious case of PMS,â I said.
Monet was smiling. âItâs good to see that nothingâs changed with you two.â
As we walked back to rehearsal, I wondered. Something had definitely changed between Dev and me, but what?
Monet caught up with me the next day before class. âHey, you had fun the other night, right?â
âYou mean with Tanner? Yes. In fact, I was hoping heâd ask me out again.â
âThatâs great,â she replied. âBecause both he and Scott have to work on Friday night until closing and they wanted to know if we wanted to do something afterward.â
âWhy didnât he ask me himself?â I said.
âHeâs shy,â she said.
âSounds good,â I said. And it wasnât like anyone else was beating down my door. I had to have some kind of social life or people would think I had turned into a recluse or something.
But on Friday, I was in the library during freeperiod when Eli Hudson, a big-man-on-campus senior, leaned over to me from the
