fantasy had let him down, he went back in the house.
After the enormous lunch heâd eaten, he wasnât hungry, but he strayed to the kitchen and started going through the cupboards. He found a bag of Oreos and was in the process of twisting one apart when his mother came in the front door.
âYouâre home,â she said as he came out of the kitchen.
âI got here about ten minutes ago. Where is everybody?â She had on a pair of shorts over her swimming suit but didnât look as if sheâd been in the water.
âYou mean everyone else?â she chided gently. âThey went shopping. Tracy wanted to get something new to wear tonight.â
Chris caught a note of disapproval, unusual for his mother. âIâm glad theyâre not here,â he said, surprised that he meant it. âWait till you hear where Iâve been today. Itâs so cool, Mom. Youâre not going to believe it.â
She smiled at his enthusiasm. âSo tell me.â
He did, and just as he knew she would, she asked the right questions and showed the right amount of excitement.
âYou had no idea who he was?â Margaret asked when heâd finished.
âNone. I had the whole bunch of them pegged for construction workers.â
âEric told me they were shooting a movie in Watsonville. But who would have thought a movie star would be out on the beach playing volleyball like everyone else.â
âYou wouldnât recognize him if you saw him. Heâs got long hair and always has on sunglasses and a hat.â
She reached up and affectionately lifted his hair off his forehead and combed it back with her fingers. âAntonio Gallardo could look the exact way he did in his last movie and you still wouldnât have recognized him.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYouâre the least starstruck person I know.â
On impulse he asked, âYou want to come to the party with me tonight?â
âThanks, but I have a date.â
âWith Eric?â
Her eyes widened in genuine surprise. âWhatever made you think that?â
âI dunno, heâs single, youâre single. Youâre both about the same age. He seems like a nice guy, and youâre not bad yourself.â
âHow could he resist, with all that going for me?â
âWell?â
âNo, Iâm not going out with Eric. After we drop Tracy and Janice off at the boardwalk, Beverly and I are going to a movie.â
âDoes Tracy know youâre taking the car?â
âI figure thatâs Beverlyâs problem.â
He nodded sagely. âWhich is why you didnât go shopping with them.â
She laughed. âSometimes youâre too smart for your own good.â
âHey, do me a favor?â
âYes?â Margaret said.
âDonât tell anyone about the movie thing, okay?â
âWant to spring it on Tracy and Janice yourself?â
Actually, heâd begun to wonder if he wanted to tell them about it at all. âI donât like the idea of Tracy . . .â He shrugged. âI donât know. I just donât feel right about it.â
âSheâd be impressed,â Margaret said. âShe might even want to go with you tonight after all.â
âI knowâthatâs what I mean.â
âNow Iâm impressed.â
âDonât be. I could always change my mind.â
Â
The battle over the car was still going on when Beverly and Tracy walked in the door an hour later. Janice slipped in behind them, passed through the living room with her head down, and disappeared into her and Tracyâs room. She came out a short time later carrying a towel and announced she was going for a swim.
Margaret looked at Chris and said softly, âWhy donât you go with her?â
He changed into his trunks and left. Tracyâs and Beverlyâs raised voices followed him out the door.
