with this. All the signals were mixed up.
âWell, erâ¦â
âObviously, as the leader you must give the orders,â said Darktan.
âYes, erâ¦â
âBut my advice, sir, is that we investigate this. Unknown things are dangerous.â
âYes. Certainly,â said Hamnpork. âYes, indeed. We will investigate. Of course. See to it. I am the leader, and that is what I am saying.â
Â
Maurice looked around at the inside of the rat catchersâ shed.
âIt looks like a rat catchersâ shed,â he said. âBenches, chairs, stove, lots of rat skins hanging up, piles of old traps, a couple of dog muzzles, rolls of wire netting, a considerable amount of a lack of any dusting ever being done. Itâs what Iâd have expected a rat catchersâ hut to look like inside.â
âI was expecting somethingâ¦horrible yet interesting,â said Malicia. âSome ghastly clue.â
âDoes there have to be a clue?â said Keith.
âOf course!â said Malicia, looking under a chair. âLook, cat, thereâs two types of people in the world. There are those who have got the plot, and those who havenât.â
âThe world hasnât got a plot ,â said Maurice. âThings justâ¦happen, one after another.â
âOnly if you think of it like that,â said Malicia, far too smugly in Mauriceâs opinion. âThereâs always a plot. You just have to know where to look.â
She paused for a moment and then said, âLook! Thatâs the word! Thereâll be a secret passage, of course! Everyone look for the entrance to the secret passage!â
âErâ¦how will we know itâs the entrance to a secret passage?â asked Keith, looking even more bewildered than normally. âWhat does a secret passage look like?â
âIt wonât look like one, of course!â
âOh, well , in that case I can see dozens of secret passages,â said Maurice. âDoors, windows, that calendar from the Acme Poison Company, that cupboard over there, that rat hole, that desk, thatââ
âYouâre just being sarcastic,â said Malicia, lifting up the calendar and sternly inspecting the wall behind it.
âActually, I was just being flippant,â said Maurice. âBut I can do sarcastic if you like.â
Keith stared at the long bench, which was in front of a window frosted with ancient cobwebs. Traps were piled up on it. All kinds of traps. And beside them were row upon row of battered old tins and jars with labels like âDanger: Hydrogen Dioxide!â and âRatBaneâ and âFire-Gutâ and âPolyputaketlon: Extreme Cautionâ and âRatAway!!!â and âKillerat!â and âEssence of Barbed Wire: Danger!!!â andâhe leaned closer to look at this oneââSugar.â There were a couple of mugs, too, and a teapot. White and green and gray powders were scattered on thebench. Some of them had even fallen on the floor.
âYou might try to be some help,â said Malicia, tapping the walls.
âI donât know how to look for something that doesnât look like the thing Iâm looking for,â said Keith. âAnd they keep the poison right next to the sugar! So many poisonsâ¦â
Malicia stood back and brushed her hair out of her eyes.
âThis isnât working,â she said.
âI suppose there might not be a secret passage?â said Maurice. âI know itâs a rather daring idea, but perhaps this is just an ordinary shed?â
Even Maurice recoiled a little from the force of the stare Malicia turned on him.
âThere has to be a secret passage,â she said. âOtherwise thereâs no point .â
She snapped her fingers. âOf course! Weâre doing it wrong! Everyone knows you never find the secret passage by looking for it! Itâs when you give up and
