spending an afternoon in close confinement with Elle. The quick tutorial heâd promised her. Or the possessive way the guy who ran the Blue Boar had touched her arm.
Â
Elle skidded to a stop in the doorway. Sorrel was standing by the table reading Basilâs letter.
âWhereâs Gran?â Elle asked.
âWashing her hands. Tidying her hair. Getting ready for that ânice young man with the ice creamâ,â Sorrel added, patting her hair, mimicking her grandmother perfectly.
âThere is no ice cream. At least not today.â She had halfexpected Sean to follow her, but she was the one whoâd said there was no time. âSeanâs gone.â
âShame. I hoped you were getting serious attention from someone a little more appealing than Freddy,â her sister teased.
âIâve locked up.â
Elle had sensed Seanâs presence a fraction of a second before he spoke. A subtle change in the light, the widening in Sorrelâs eyes, a charge in the air that had the fine hairs on her skin springing to attentionâ¦
Sean put Rosieâs keys on the kitchen table. âIâll come back later with the trailer and pick up the car.â
âOh, yes. Of course.â She forgotten all about his promise to take their car to the scrapyard. âI wonât be here, but Sorrelâ¦â her beautiful, elegant sister, the one in control of her hair, her figure, her life, if not her tongue ââ¦will be here if you need a hand.â
âIf you give me the keys, I wonât have to bother anyone,â he said.
âOf course.â Elle took them from the key cupboard and dropped them into his palm, taking care not to touch him. âIâll leave the garage door unlocked.â
âIâm not sure how much I can get for it,â he warned.
âGet for it? I was told Iâd have to pay to have it towed to the scrapyard.â
âWhen you need towing youâre in a buyerâs market. Iâll take a look at what needs doing, make a few calls. Itâs possible youâd do better advertising it on the Internet,â he told her.
âI didnât expect you to go to all that trouble,â Elle protested.
âWhoâd buy it?â Sorrel asked at the same time.
He looked up. âYouâd be surprised,â he said, answering her sister. Then, in the slightly awkward silence that followed, âIâll be here at about eleven on Saturday, if thatâs okay? It should give us plenty of time to run through everything before we go.â
âThanks.â
âTell your grandmother she can have all the ice cream she can eat then.â
âSheâll enjoy that,â Elle said.
He nodded and was gone.
Elle turned on her sister, hands to her cheeks. âDid he hear?â
âDoes it matter?â she asked.
ââGetting serious attention?â Could you have made me sound more desperate?â
âElle, you are desperate. If youâre not careful, youâll succumb to Freddy out of sheer frustration.â
âDonâtâ¦â She took a deep breath. âJust donâtâ¦â
âOnly saying. You need to grab that one while heâs available.â
âHeâs not,â she said shortly. He might have come close to kissing her just now but heâd been firmly attached to the linen-clad blonde last night. Or sheâd been firmly attached to him. Which amounted to the same thing. She should be grateful to Geli for turning up when she had.
Give her a little time and she would be.
âButââ
âThe subject is closed,â Elle announced firmly.
âOkay. But you could have cut the tension in here just now with a knife,â Sorrel remarked. âC-L-O-S-â
âOkay, okay, okay.â Her sister held up the letter. âTell me about Basil.â
Grateful for the change of subject, Elle took the letter from her, giving her a
