customers â basically, the whole of western Europe. They pay by the barrel. Must cost a fortune.â
âBet they donât like that,â Jade said.
âBet they donât. But Krejikistan â or rather this KOS company â controls the whole thing. Pay through the nose, or ship everything miles and miles out of your way.â
âRight,â Jade agreed. âBut that doesnât help us find Dad. Or help us understand why this Ardman bloke warned us not to mess with Vishinsky.â
âIâll tell you something else I donât understand,â Rich said.
âYeah?â
âWhy would the Ministry of Defence be doing business with a company that is owned and based in the former Soviet Union? And what does this KOS company have that theyâd want anyway? OK, look,â he pointed at a list of KOS sites around the world, âtheyâve got some sort of research facility and storage depot just outside London. But even so.â
Jade looked where Rich was pointing. âIsnât that the place there was a big fire or something last week?I saw a headline, Iâm sure.â She leaned back in the hard café seat. âSo what now? Phone a friend?â She pulled Dadâs mobile from her rucksack.
They leaned close over the phone. It was switched on but key-locked. Rich managed to work out how to unlock it, and they checked the address book. There were no numbers in it.
âBig help,â Jade said.
Rich sighed. âHe really is Johnny No-Mates. Hang on, there should be a list of calls made and received somewhere.â He fiddled with the phone until he found the call register. âHere we are. Look â heâs made a fair few calls. Received a load too, but all from âNumber Withheldâ. Another big help.â
The phone vibrated in Richâs hand.
âWhat did you do that for?â Jade asked.
âI didnât.â
âSomeone calling?â
The phone had stopped. Rich showed Jade the screen. âOne Text Message Received.â
âLetâs have a look then,â she said.
The message read:
âIs sample safe? Do you have it? Where?? Urgent you reply. Dad.â
âAt least heâs safe,â Rich said.
âIs he?â
âWhat do you mean? He sent us a text.â
Jade took the phone from Rich and read the text message again. âBut weâve got his phone. And why did he send it to himself?â Jade pulled her own mobile from her pocket. âDid you get the message too? I didnât. Easy enough to send all the phones the same text.â
âAre you saying this didnât come from Dad? Then who did send it?â
âSomeone who wants this sample everyone keeps going on about. Whatever it is. But who?â
Rich took the phone back from her and worked the buttons. âProbably number withheld again,â he muttered. âWoah! Here we go. They have to give us the number so we can reply.â The number that came up in the text message details was so long it wrapped on to a second line of the screen. âIs that a mobile number?â he wondered out loud.
âYou going to call back?â Jade wondered.
âNot till I know more about it. And not from this phone.â He turned back to the computer keyboard and typed the first digits of the number into the internet search page.
âHere you are, look. Itâs an international dialling code.â
âDonât tell me,â Jade said as Rich scrolled to it.
âKrejikistan,â they both said in unison.
âRight. Doesnât mean the phone is there though,â Rich said. âBut thatâs where they got the phone and thatâs where they pay the bills.â
âYou going to call the number?â
Rich considered. âYouâre right; I donât think it was Dad.â
âNo harm in calling.â
âExcept then theyâll know we have the phone, and we got the
