roved over him before she said, “I can see why she’s so attracted to you. Maybe she was right about a fabulous mind.”
“She said that?” For some reason, he liked the idea.
“She said a lot of things, and now that I’ve met you I’m beginning to understand why. But let me be clear, Mr. Taylor. Doctor Gavin is on the fast track to becoming a very well-respected psychologist. She graduated top of her class. That’s top, not second or third out of two hundred and forty, but first.”
    “I know. She’s a smart cookie.”
“Cookie? Cookies are for the Keebler Elves, Mr. Taylor. Doctor Gavin is an intelligent woman who needs an intelligent man. And if I have my way she’ll find one at which time they will have equally intelligent children. That’s her path, and you are not on it.”
He was getting hot under the collar here. And he didn’t know why. The truth was, that path she was talking about? He’d already decided a week and half ago he was going to stay the hell away from it. “I understand. Now if you let me have my stuff I’ll be on my way.”
She stretched to her full height and glared down her nose at him. “You don’t understand because you have the attention span the size of a gnat. I’m trying to tell you that she needs to get you out of her system before I can make those plans for her future happen. You came at her with all your playboy ways, and now she thinks she’s infatuated with you. You can’t just abandon her because then she’d never get over you. I’d be competing with a memory of who she made you out to be. I don’t know what you did during your last session, but I do know it has her questioning a number of things.”
Even though she’d just insulted him, that wasn’t why he felt like shit. Jaxx was doing exactly what he feared. She was second-guessing herself because he’d pulled a fast one on her with those test items. You knew there was a risk she’d think she’d failed at her job. “If I made her think she did some wrong—”
    “Well, you did.”
    “I never meant to.”
“No real man would do such a thing, I’m sure. Are you a real man, Mr. Taylor?”
Perfect. She had him by the short ones as there was only one answer to that. And once he gave it, he’d be obligated to do whatever she had in mind to make the situation right. “Yes.”
“Good. Now don’t scowl. It’s not as if I’m going to ask you to do something that will be too taxing on you. All you need to do is dinner. One evening at a nice restaurant. A meal. That’s it.”
Like hell. There had to be more. Didn’t she want him to apologize? That was the first thing he should do. “I don’t get it.”
She let out a relieved breath and clapped her hands. “Finally, that fabulous mind is not so fabulous.”
    He blinked.
“And not so fabulous? That’s the objective. Just be yourself for two hours, and she’ll get over you.”
He was going to laugh, but then he realized the woman was serious, so he stuck to glaring at her.
“Oh, don’t take it personally.” She plucked an imaginary bit of lint off her sleeve and pretended to study it. “It’s a curse being smarter than average. As such Jaxx needs to be stimulated and if she’s not, she’s easily bored.”
That got his antenna extending upward. Not good .
    “No run-of-the-mill for her.”
His antenna tinged, fully extended. Pretend she didn’t just say that .
“She needs a man who can compete with her on a deeper level.”
He could do that. Not gonna happen .
“One who has new and interesting ideas to share with her.”
He had a whole dungeon full. Get the fuck out with those kinds of thoughts.
She looked at him. “Quite frankly, Mr. Taylor, the one thing she needs above all these others, you can’t give her.”
    “And that is?”
    “Loyalty.”
If she were trying to drive him away from Jaxx, she was failing. “Why? Did she have a bad experience in a relationship? A boyfriend cheat on her or something?”
    “God,
