consulting the horoscopes. âYouâve got a five-star day.â
âWhatâs mine?â asked Elizabeth, breezing into the kitchen and pouring herself a cup of coffee.
âFour. It says, âYour adventurous nature can lead you in new and rewarding directions if you will trust yourself.â â
âI think sheâs been quite adventurous enough,â said Bill, draining his coffee and standing up.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â demanded Elizabeth, who was always ready to defend herself.
âYou know very well what I mean, young lady,â said Bill. âYouâve had your fling with this nudism but now itâs time to stop, especially considering your brotherâs situation.â
Elizabeth glared at him. âAre you saying I canât sun myself because Toby got himself in trouble? That makes no sense at all!â
âIt makes plenty of sense,â said Bill. âYouâve got to think about your reputation, and what your brother does affects that.â
âWhat is this? A time warp?â Elizabeth rolled her eyes. âThis isnât the fifties, Dad.â
âYour father has a point,â said Lucy. âThis is a small town and people talk. Theyâre going to start wondering whatâs going on with the Stone family.â She looked out the window towards the kennel, where Kudo was stretched out with his chin on his paws. âWe all need to keep a low profile for a while, until we drop off peopleâs radar screens.â
âThis is nuts,â said Elizabeth, throwing her hands up in exasperation. âIâm out of here. At least theyâre sane at the Queen Vic.â She paused at the door. âAnd donât count on me for supperâIâve got plans.â
âWhat plans?â demanded Bill, but Elizabeth was out the door.
âYouâve got to do something about that girl,â he said, picking up his lunch cooler. âSheâs out of control.â
âRight. Iâll do what I can,â said Lucy, standing on tiptoe to give him a peck on the cheek. She stroked his arm. âEverything will be okay.â
âI hope so,â he said.
Lucy watched through the screen door as he trudged out to his truck, looking as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. She went back to the table and picked up the paper to check her horoscopeâone star.
Like many other mothers, Lucy had discovered that the time she spent chauffeuring the kids was a good time to broach difficult subjects, so she decided to tackle Zoe and Sara about their trespassing on the Prattsâ property when she drove them to day camp.
âYou girls know better than to do something like that,â she said. âWhat were you thinking?â
âMrs. Prattâs mean,â said Zoe.
âThe whole family is mean,â added Sara. âIâm glad Toby punched Wesley. And you know what? I bet if they hadnât broken up the fight he would have beat up Wesley.â
Lucy couldnât believe her ears. âSara! Thatâs no way to talk. What Toby did was very wrong. Thereâs no excuse for fighting. It doesnât solve anything. It just causes more problems.â
âWell, I donât care,â said Sara, stubbornly. âIf Iâd been there I wouldâve helped him.â
âMe, too,â said Zoe.
âWell, I understand that you love Toby, but that doesnât mean heâs perfect. He made a big mistake and heâs going to have to pay for it.â
âWill he go to jail, Mom?â Saraâs voice was very small.
Lucy felt as if sheâd been stabbed right in the heart. She pulled the car over and braked, turning so she could face both girls.
âI wish I could tell you that wonât happen, but the truth is that thereâs a possibility, a very tiny one, that he might be sent to jail.â She reached out and held their hands.
