wanted to kiss her yet again. Kiss away that pretty pout marring those pink, luscious lips.
“I had a real good time last night. I just wanted to thank you for that,” he blurted.
Her eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t say anything. Didn’t smile. Hell, what did he expect, anyways? It wasn’t like they were lovers or something. Silently, he kicked himself in his ass for having feelings of guilt, opened the door, and stepped out of the room.
When Cassidy and Spencer saw him enter the kitchen, they must have noticed his confused state, because they suddenly stopped chuckling and eyed him with concern.
“What?” Spencer asked as he sat on the chair Teyla had used last night while they’d eaten the potatoes, bacon, and peaches.
Spencer had taken Logan’s chair, his hand clutched around the empty peach can. If the guy had been trying to suck the last drops of syrup from the can, he was out of luck. Logan had made sure he’d given Teyla most of the peach juice last night when he’d portioned out the peaches.
“What about the posse? Any sight of them?” Logan asked, ignoring Spencer’s question.
They’d obviously gotten chilled during their ride over here because they’d stoked the stove with firewood, and it was roaring and pumping out heat like a blast furnace. Despite that, though, Logan couldn’t shake off the coldness enveloping him with regards to Teyla. He should have kissed her. Reassured her that if she didn’t want to go through with this ménage, she didn’t have to. But, man, he wanted to share her. Wanted to watch the pleasure slash across her face when they took her. Okay, so later he would ask if she’d changed her mind. Right now, they needed to get down to business.
“No sight of anyone, and we did hear back from the rest of the gang through that lady doctor. She’s quite a piece. Just as pretty as this woman you snagged for us,” Spencer replied as he lifted the empty can above his mouth and awaited a sweet drop.
Logan grinned at the sight and at the compliment for Teyla. Damned right, she was a pretty woman. No, a beautiful woman.
“You’ve got a tiger on your hands with that one,” Cassidy chuckled from his perch. “A couple of men back in town spoke really highly of her. But they said she hadn’t been getting much business, because she’s refusing to put out for the banker who owns the mortgage on her place. The banker is warning all her johns to stay away or else he will foreclose on their places. As luck would have it for her, the banker also happens to be the self-appointed law in the nearest town to this place. He lived through the Catastrophe and kept his bank going and is insisting she keep making monthly payments on her farm or he’ll foreclose on her.”
Bastard. He hadn’t known that fact about Teyla. Was that why she’d been so willing and hot in bed? To give him a good time on purpose? To get him hooked on her so he’d keep coming back?
Logan shook those stupid thoughts away. No, instincts told him she wasn’t like that, but he certainly did feel a nasty burst of anger at the banker. He tamped down on his anger. Emotions, my man. He couldn’t get emotionally involved with a woman. He didn’t want to get emotionally involved with any woman again. Losing his wife had hurt too much.
Heck, wasn’t that why he was in the situation he was in now? Because the grief over losing his wife and kids had made him want to do something to help out other people who’d found themselves in a similar situation he’d found himself in after the Catastrophe? Stealing from homes and being desperate enough to do just about anything to make sure his daughters were fed? He’d thought he was doing right by stealing from rich guys and giving to the poor. Now, after meeting Teyla, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to do this anymore. He wanted to stay here and settle down with her.
He forced those thoughts away. He wouldn’t go down the love road again. He just
