secrets to her under the covers and she whispers âur-ur-ur-ur-urâ back to me. Itâs as if weâre having our own tiny private sleepover just for us.
I got into bed with her that night and told her all about Amyâs sleepover. Iâve told her all about Amy and Bella. Iâve told her heaps about Emily and how I wish she could be my best friend. Iâve told her heaps about Chloe too and how I wish she didnât sometimes act like she was my worst enemy.
âWhatâs that youâre saying, Lily?â I whispered. âOh, I get it! You say that Emilyâs probably going to get seriously fed up with Chloe being so mean and moody all the time. You think sheâs going to break friends with her and be
my
best friend instead?â
Lily went, âUr ur ur ur ur.â
I gave her a grateful hug. Sometimes I was almost glad she was my sister.

Â
AMY AND BELLA and Chloe and Emily and I all got very excited about the sleepover party. We talked about it all the time at school. We talked about it so much that our teacher Mrs Graham got cross with us.
She got especially cross with Chloe because her voice was the loudest. She kept her in at playtime. I had a lovely playtime with Emily. She said she liked my long hair and wished she could brush it, so I undid my plaits and then we played hairdressers and I was a posh lady going to a dance and Emily was fixing my hair for me, and she gave me a facial too, with soap from the washbasins in the girlsâ cloakrooms. I didnât wash all the soap off properly so my face felt a bit stiffwhen we went into the classroom. It went stiffer still when I saw Chloe glaring at me. I knew she was going to get me.
âYou mean pig, Daisy!â she yelled as soon as it was going-home time. âIt was all
your
fault.
You
were saying something stupid about how youâve never been to a sleepover before so
I
said you canât have had any friends at your old school and then Mrs Graham got cross with me when
I
didnât start saying stuff, it was
you
. Why didnât you tell her it was all your fault?â
âIt wasnât really Daisyâs
fault
,â said Emily.
âYes it was! She wouldnât own up. She let me take the blame. Sheâs horrible. I donât know why we have to have her tagging around with us all the time,â said Chloe.
âDonât be like that, Chloe,â said Emily, putting her arm round her. âHere, do you want a chocolate biscuit? I saved it for you.â
Chloe wouldnât take the chocolate biscuit so Bella ate it.
âAre you really having a chocolate cake for your birthday, Amy?â said Bella. âYeah, my mumâs friendâs making it. And weâre having egg sandwiches and sausages on sticksand cheese and pineapple and fancy ice-creams and special fruity drinks with teeny umbrellas,â said Amy, her eyes shining.
âLike grown-up cocktails,â I said.
âIs Daisy still coming to your sleepover?â said Chloe.
My heart started thumping.
But Emily was quick. âCourse she is. Weâre all coming. Hey, I canât wait till itâs
my
sleepover party. If my mum lets me have one.â
â
My
mum will let me. She lets me do
anything
. Iâm going to have the best sleepover party ever, youâll see,â said Chloe.
I was pretty sure I wasnât going to be invited to Chloeâs sleepover party. I didnât care. But I did desperately want to go to Amyâs.
âOf course you can still come, Daisy,â Amy whispered in my ear.
I gave Amy a quick hug. I decided I liked Amy almost as much as Emily.
I went shopping with Mum to buy Amy a birthday present. I thought I might buy her a grown-up fountain pen as she liked writing. Iwanted to spend a long time choosing, but Lily was with us too, of course, and she was having a bad day, crying a lot.
People started staring at us and it made Lily more upset. She cried
