diabolical scheme!â
I squeezed his hand and twitched one side of my face at him. I didnât really feel like smiling. âWell, I gave him Hollywood.â
âI know! Brilliant!â He nodded and grinned some more. âIâm Dr. Tyler Niles.â
âOkay,â I said, and looked at Lowell. âWhy am I here?â
Lowell nodded to the scientist and was about to say something but Dr. Niles started talking first. âOkay,â said the scientist, âyouâre a sorcerer, so you already know ectoplasm flows through the earthâs crust. Arcane energy, magic, juiceâcall it whatever you want. Thereâs certainlyno scientific name for it. We call it ectoplasm. Itâs funny.â He bobbed his head and grinned.
âHilarious,â I agreed.
âRight, so the ectoplasmic flow is concentrated in ley lines. This building is constructed on the site of a major convergence of two ley linesâthe trunk lines that follow the Santa Ana River and the San Andreas Fault.â He crossed his forearms and giggled. â X marks the spot.â
âThereâs a ley line on the San Andreas Fault?â Dr. Niles nodded. âThe largest in North America.â
âThat doesnât concern you, though, becauseâ¦â
âWhy should it? Thereâs no evidence the ley line interacts with the tectonics of the region, if thatâs what youâre getting at.â
âSo itâs a coincidence that this huge flow ofâ¦ectoplasmâ¦in the earthâs crust follows the same course as this huge seam in the earthâs crust?â
Dr. Niles shrugged. âOkay, like you, weâve been thinking about ways to empirically measureâand monitorâthe ectoplasmic flow.â
âI havenât really been thinking about that,â I said.
âEarly warning,â said Lowell. âMagic is returning to the world. If we can measure and localize it, we might be able to predict the instabilities and other events it produces.â
âRight,â said Dr. Niles. âThereâs just one problem.â I waited. He bobbed his head and grinned some more. âEctoplasm doesnât interact at all with machines. Our technology canât detect it, canât measure it, canât do anything with it. As far as the machines are concerned, ectoplasm doesnât exist.â
I frowned. âThatâs not right. I have spells that affect machines.â
Dr. Niles thrust an index finger in the air. âPrecisely!Spells can affect machines, but raw ectoplasm cannot. Magic can only interact with a machine through a medium. â
âA sorcerer,â I said.
âA human, or at least a sentient mind. As we discovered, the medium doesnât have to be a sorcerer.â The scientist leaned down and tapped on the keyboard in front of him. The panel in front of the viewing window retracted into the ceiling with an electric hum.
The control room looked out onto an open space that must have occupied most of the building. A massive green wheel pattern was etched into the concrete floor, and three glass and steel cylinders were positioned at the center of the wheel. The cylinders were filled with liquid and a woman hung suspended in each of them. The women wore respirators but were otherwise naked. Tubes snaked from their arms, and electrodes spotted their bodies.
âJesus fucking Christ,â I said. âWho are they?â
Dr. Niles glanced at Lowell. The agent frowned and cleared his throat. âTheyâre indefinite detainees. Another agency sent them to us from Pakistan. Theyâre sisters. Theyâre all widows and they were being trained as suicide bombers.â
âThis is disgusting.â
âI agree,â said Dr. Niles. âItâs fucking fascist. If it makes you feel any better, the Sisters volunteered.â I could hear the capitalization in his almost reverent
