clothes from the various places theyâd landed in their fevered removal, but she didnât rush to redress. She didnât want him to think she was self-conscious in front of him. She wasnât. Heâd seen her naked and flushed with the afterglow of sex many times before.
Sheâd just had sex for the sake of sex and for no other reason. Should she feel guilty or cheap?
âYou were amazing.â
She flicked her gaze his way. He was smiling, looking arrogant and proud and satisfied. Sheâd done that. Sheâd put that look on his face, had given as good as sheâd gotten. She knew she had, that heâd been right there with her all the way right up until theyâd climaxed in a loud, guttural cry.
âSo were you,â she admitted, starting to feel claustrophobic as the implications of what theyâd done hit her. Theyâd just had unprotected sex.
What had she been thinking?
What had he been thinking?
Obviously neither of them had been thinking.
Panic built within her chest. So much so that she needed him gone, needed time to think, to process what had happened between them. She was on the pill, but what if something went wrong and she got pregnant?
She couldnât. She just couldnât. What if...?
âI need you to leave while I go take a shower.â Even to her own ears her voice sounded panicked, high-pitched.
Confusion replacing the satisfaction on his face, his brows veed together. âHuh?â
âIâm going to take a shower.â She tried to sound calm. She didnât want him to know how shaken she was by their having had sex. By the fact that, since Lucas didnât know she was on oral contraceptives, he had just risked getting her pregnant, something heâd meticulously made sure to never risk while theyâd been married.
She met his gaze and didnât so much as blink as she stared him down. She couldnât or the tears she was fighting might spill free. âBe gone from my apartment when I get out of the shower.â
CHAPTER EIGHT
C ASSIE B ELLOWS â S NIGHT NURSE reported that the child had cried in pain most of the night. Theyâd given her medication, but even in her sleep tears had fallen.
Emilyâs heart twisted as she took report on the little girl. She hated the thought of the child in so much pain that sheâd cried even during sleep.
âI called Dr. Cain and heâll be by this morning to check on her. He plans to get her into surgery this week.â
Lucas was coming by.
Of course he was coming by. He worked there. She worked there. Theyâd see each other, behave professionally as if they hadnât had sweaty kitchen sex the night before, and theyâd be polite.
Only, when Lucas came in, he wasnât polite. He was irritated. With her.
He should be grateful that she wasnât a wide-eyed innocent who wanted marriage, children and happily-ever-after as sheâd been when they first met.
Children. Emilyâs breath caught and for a moment a wave of dizziness almost overtook her. Why hadnât Lucas mentioned birth control the night before? Why hadnât she thought to ask him? Why hadnât he worn a condom? He was a wealthy man, one whose parents had accused her of trying to trap him.
If only they knew the truth. If only Lucas knew.
âWhen was Cassieâs last dose of painkiller?â he practically growled.
Emily leaned in and pointed to the computer screen.
âRight there.â She tapped the screen, pulling up where the medication was recorded. He was still fairly new. Maybe he truly hadnât known. Then again, Lucas was a quick study. She would guess he knew more ins and outs of their computer system than she did after being there for years.
He studied the screen, then frowned. âI want to increase her dose.â He named the quantity.
She made a mental note. âWith her next dose due when?â
âNow. Give the medication,â
