trying.
“You won’t have a choice,” she told him, still refusing to meet his gaze. “You’ll have to do something.”
He rolled his shoulders, trying to defuse some of the tension building there. What the hell was she talking about?
“What kind of secret can you be holding that would make me do something to you? I can’t be compelled against my will,” he said. “I care for you, Hannah. You’ve made it harder than I’d prefer, true, but that hasn’t stopped my dumb self from falling for you.”
She winced at his words, and Josh cursed. He had meant it in jest, not as a jab at her.
“If you found out, it would change everything.” She opened her mouth to say more, then hesitated. He saw her find some inner strength before she continued, something he admired, though the words she spoke surprised him. “I like having you around, you know. Despite all…this,” she said with a wave of her hand to indicate everything going on, “and I don’t want that to change.”
Josh frowned. “I’m not going anywhere, Hannah. I promise.”
She looked up at him at last, her deep hazel eyes filled with pain and suffering of such a degree that he felt himself take a step back. How could one person carry so much? His bear roared, wanting to reach out and take some of that burden from her, to ease the weight on her shoulders in any way he could.
“I know,” she told him. “That’s why I would have to leave.”
“I don’t get it,” he said, throwing his hands up in confusion. “Why can’t you just stay with me?” He reached out to touch her shoulder, but Hannah pulled away from him.
Josh stood there, arm outstretched in stunned shock at the recoil in her body, the way she had desperately tried to pull away from him. He scanned over all the memories he had of their time together. What had he done to make her so afraid of him? He wasn’t sure what was pulling his bear toward her either, but it had rarely steered him wrong. Had it finally gotten things wrong? There had been far fewer happy moments with Hannah than there had been sad or frustrating, that was for sure.
    But that smile of hers…
“Please,” she whispered. “This is already hard enough.”
“If you would just get over your fear and tell me, then perhaps I could help you. You don’t have to do this alone!” he all but shouted.
Anger threaded its way into her expression. “You don’t know what you’re talking about!” she said, pushing him away from her, turning to leave without him.
“What?” he said, chasing after her. “You can’t handle being called out? I don’t know what else to do, Hannah. You tell me you like me, but you can’t be around me? You avoid me for three days—I’ll give you it was somewhat mutual—but I see the glances you give me. I see them because I’m looking at you as well,” he said, catching up at her, getting in front of her.
“Josh,” she tried to protest, but he shook his head.
“No more,” he said, and before she could react, he stepped forward, cupping her chin and lifting it toward him.
    Then he kissed her.

Chapter Ten
    Hannah
She stood still, unable to react as his lips pressed fiercely against hers, the pent-up passion that neither of them had been able to release bleeding through his touch, infusing her with its power.
Against her better judgment, Hannah felt her head begin to tilt, her resistance to his touch fading.
It was all but over once her eyes started to close. Her body melting into his grasp was an afterthought by then, resistance futile at that point as she allowed herself to be swept up in his calming touch.
Odd, she thought as their lips locked furiously. The last few times he’s touched me, it’s driven me wild.
Not that I’m not this time, but different wild.
She was confused, but delighted at the delicious surprise of being able to have bodily contact with him without needing to flee. That was reassuring on a level she couldn’t begin to
