smiled warmly.
I got into the elevator and the doors closed. I noticed the light for the ground floor was already active.
    “Going down?” he asked.
    I nodded.
“Me, too,” he grinned. “I was just up on the third floor picking up movie tickets for my parents.”
The elevator doors closed, and the cabin lurched. Suddenly, there was a sharp, metallic grinding sound followed by a loud shriek. The elevator shuddered violently, and then it came to a standstill.
    “What the…” Max mumbled.
He poked at the buttons, but nothing happened. He tried to pull the doors apart, but they would not budge.
“Push the alarm button,” I suggested.
He pushed it, but nothing happened.
“Oh, for crying out loud,” he grumbled.
“What should we do?” I asked.
“I guess I’ll try the phone,” he said, motioning to the emergency call box.
He opened it and took the phone out. After fiddling with it for a while, he shrugged.
    “It’s not working,” he sighed.
    “Great,” I muttered.
“They’ll figure out that something’s wrong when no one else can use it,” he said.
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” I said.
We stood there in silence for a long while, waiting for someone to show up. No one did. It was eerily quiet inside the elevator. I was wishing it were a glass elevator like the one in the main lobby of the mall. Sadly, this was a smaller elevator near the end of the mall, and there was no way for anyone to see us inside.
    I glanced at my watch.
“They close in 30 minutes. Do you think they’ll come for us in time?”
“I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe we can call for help?”
I pulled my phone out of my purse. I knew I could just yank the doors apart and climb out, but I couldn’t let Max see me do that. He had no idea I was a vampire, and I couldn’t exactly make it known to a human. I dialed the phone, and waited.
    “Hello?” came the answer.
“Kai?” I said. “Is my brother there?” I knew it wouldn’t be a good idea to call have Kai come get me when I was stuck in the elevator with a guy he’d seen kissing me on the cheek a few weeks earlier.
“Yeah, just a sec,” he said.
I heard him put the phone down.
“What’s up?” I heard my brother say.
“Will, I’m stuck in an elevator at the mall,” I told him. “It’s been about a half hour, but no one has come. The emergency phone is dead, and the alarm won’t work. Can you call the mall and get help?”
“Can’t you just open the doors?” Will asked.
    “Um…” I started. “Well… I’m not alone.”
“Oh,” Will said. “Okay, I’ll call the mall and see what I can do.”
“Thanks,” I said, and I hung up.
A few minutes later, Will called me back.
“Alice? I just got a recorded message. I can’t reach anyone.”
“Are you serious?” I groaned. I looked at Max. “He just got a recorded message, not a live person.”
    Max groaned.
“What should I do?” I asked Will.
“Just hang tight,” Will said. “I’ll be there in a few minutes, and I’ll tell a security guard.”
    “Okay. Thanks, Will,” I replied.
I hung up the phone and told Max that my brother was coming and he would tell a security guard we were stuck here. I sat down on the floor, and Max sat down next to me. In fact, he sat down so close to me his arm was touching mine.
Oh, this is not going to turn out well , I thought suddenly. Being trapped in an enclosed space with a human was not a good idea, especially since I hadn’t fed in several days. I’d eaten before I left for the mall, but I hadn’t had blood in days. I began to feel very uncomfortable. I felt a nauseating growl in the pit of my stomach, and I began to sweat. I clutched at the collar of my sweater and tried to pull it away. It felt like it was choking me.
    “Are you okay?” Max asked.
I looked up at him, and his eyes were startlingly compelling. They were almost black, and they searched my own deeply. His face was inches away from mine, and his breath was hot
