because she hadn’t been out there learning the ropes. Too naive, that’s what she was. There were so many ways she could get into trouble.
It was practically his duty as a first responder to take her to bed.
God, when his dick did the talking, logic got twisted like a pretzel.
“We’ll take it slow.” He cupped her ass, filling his palms with her curves. “So I know you’re okay.”
“Slow?” She bit his neck gently. “Not too slow, I hope.”
“Slow is good, sweetheart. Slow is when the magic happens. But we can move up from slow. Hard, fast, slow, it’s all good.”
“Okay.” Her voice sounded higher, almost squeaky. “I trust you.”
He wasn’t sure that was such a wise move. Why should she trust a wildfire specialist whose longest relationship had been with a stripper he didn’t remember marrying? But he’d warned her. He’d been completely upfront about his shortcomings. He’d told her a relationship wasn’t in the cards. That wasn’t what she wanted, anyway.
She wanted sex. And damn it, he could do that. Sex, he could definitely provide.
He nuzzled his nose into her soft neck and breathed in the fragrance of some exotic combination of flowers that must have been designed to make a man lose every last shred of common sense.
That was it . That was the best he could do for Evie. He’d help her rediscover her sexual side and make sure she was as safe as possible in the process. After all, he trusted himself with Evie more than he trusted any other man. He actually cared about her. She’d opened up to him about how that night had affected her. That meant he knew her in a way most people didn’t.
Someone else might want to use her or count her as an especially gorgeous notch on his belt. He, on the other hand, would devote himself one hundred percent to making this the best experience possible.
Even though he couldn’t offer her stability, a family, permanence, or any of the other things girls usually wanted, he could do one important thing for her.
He could take care of her in bed.

I n her dream , Sean was braced over her, kissing her, every stroke of his tongue setting her on fire. She moaned against his mouth, “I want you, I want to be naked with you.” She arched her back and pressed her nipples against his hard chest, and suddenly she realized she was naked. So was Sean. Naked and breathtaking. His chest rippled with muscle as he bent his dark head to her breasts. He swiped his tongue in delicious circles around her nipples. Teasing, tugging. The pleasure was so intense she actually heard bells ring.
    They rang again. And again.
Evie’s eyes popped open. Her phone was ringing. She lay face down on her bed, in a tangled mess of her favorite goose down comforter, alone. Unfortunately, she remembered every detail of what had happened the night before.
She’d thrown herself at Sean and he’d nearly rejected her. But then he’d changed his mind and said yes to her request…offer…proposal…whatever you wanted to call it. But not last night. Apparently trading a bottle of wine back and forth had triggered his protective male impulses. He’d carried her into bed, tucked her in and left. Now he was probably calling to check on her—that protective male thing again.
    Not that she minded.
She snatched up the phone and answered. “Begging for another chance?”
“Oooh, that sounds juicy!” Merry answered her, not Sean. “My reporter’s Spidey sense is going off. Who wants another chance? At what? Why and when?”
Evie rolled onto her back. “It’s way too early for an interrogation. What time is it?”
“Time to face the world, chickie. I’m calling on the down-low to give you a heads-up on something.”
For a blissful moment, Evie had forgotten about the rest of her evening. Now it all came back. Brad. Their dinner. The way she’d fled from the Seaview Inn. “Does this have anything to do with Brad White?”
“Yup. I don’t know the details, but
