private.
âHowâs business, Leo?â he asked.
âGreat. And that thing Iâm working on is going well.â
âThatâs what I understand. Mookie Samberg knows what heâs doing, even if he is expensive.â He belly laughed and lit another cigarette.
âIâm going to New York in a couple of weeks to talk to the paper supplier.â
âGood, good. I trust you, Leo. I know you donât do a lot of work for us. I appreciate this initiative of yours. Everything all right? Do you need anything?â
âNo, and thank you, sir. Listen, if there is
ever
anything I can do for you, please let me know. I have a whole warehouse operation at your disposal.â
He laughed again. âOf course you do. Your father and I did a lot of business together. He was a wonderful man and a good friend.â
âYes, sir.â
âAnd, itâs funny you mention it, but I
did
want to ask you about something that maybe you could do for me.â
âWhatâs that, sir?â
âStop with that âsirâ stuff. I donât like it. And that âdonâ thing doesnât work either. Thatâs what they say in New York. Iâm not a New Yorker.â
âIâm sorry.â
âDonât ever apologize. Makes you look weak.â
âYes, sâum, I know.â
âYou know, Maria likes you, Leo. She talks about you a lot.â
âI like her too. Sheâs a lovely galâer, girl. Weâre going to Disneyland together next week.â
He paused for a second, registering that his daughter was going on a date with me. How did he feel about it? Well, apparently it was okay, because he said, âThatâs great. Youâll have a good time.â
âIâm sure we will.â
âNow listen. What I wanted to talk to you about. Your sisterââ
âChristina?â
âChristina. She did some time.â
âYes, she did, sirâdamn, Iâm sorry. What do I call you if you donât want me to call you âsirâ?â
âCall me Vince. My closest friends call me Vince.â
âAll right, Vince. Thank you. Iâm honored.â
âForget it. Anyway, your sisterââ
âChristina.â
âChristina, she was in for armed robbery, right?â
âThatâs right.â
âIs she still in the joint?â
âNo. We share a house in Hollywood.â
âOh, I wish Iâd known. I wouldâve invited her to the party.â
âItâs all right.â
He paused and looked at me, and then said, âI hear sheâs good. At armed robbery.â
That surprised me. âYeah, Iâd say she is. Was.â
âDoes she know anyone else who could, letâs say, participate in a job?â
This was getting better. I answered, âSure. Me.â
DeAngelo looked sideways at me. âYou? Youâve pulled off bank jobs?â
âI helped Christina a couple of times.â
âAre you good? Tell me the truth. Could I call you professionals?â
My sister was a pro, but I couldnât say I was. Iâd helped her out a couple of times, and she got popped on the second one. âSure, Vince. When Christina and I did that sort of thing, we were very good. We robbed this bank in San Diegoââ
âListen, I may have a job for you and Christina. Are you interested?â
Yeah, I was interested. If it was for Vincent DeAngelo, I was definitely interested. And Christina would jump at it in a heartbeat. I told him so.
âGood. I donât know anything yet, but if it happens, itâs going to be tricky. I need someone I can trust. Itâs probably going to involvea Hollywood bank. Iâll know something concrete in a few weeks. You want to talk to Christina and see if itâs something sheâs willing to risk? I know if she gets popped again itâll be bad news.â
âIâm sure sheâll be
