empty yogurt carton in her mouth.
âSee, now we know what you were eating,â I said.
Pearl took the carton to the corner of the office and settled down with it.
âShe gonna eat the fucking carton?â DiBella said.
âSheâll probably chew it and spit it out,â I said.
âOn my fucking floor?â
âIâll pick it up,â I said.
DiBella watched her for a moment, then looked at me and shook his head slowly.
âYou know how many people come in here with a fucking dog?â he said.
âNone?â
âThatâs right, none.â
âTheyâre obviously not fun like me,â I said.
âAnd God bless them for it,â DiBella said. âWe got nothing on Luis Yang.â
âHow about his brother?â
âI talked with the gang squad in Boston.â
âAnd?â
âThey got nothing on Luis Yang, either,â he said. âBut thereâs a Jose Yang in a gang called Los Diablos.â
âClever name,â I said.
âYeah. Gangbangers are always imaginative. Usual stuffâdeal dope, run a chop shop, fight other gangs.â
âGuns?â
âYeah. Gang squad says they have guns, probably got a connection. Probably could get more. Probably pretty much anything you wanted.â
âSo,â I said. âMaybe we know where the guns came from.â
âMaybe,â DiBella said. âWe could shake Animal a little, see what came out.â
âWe can always do that,â I said. âIf we do it too soon and release him, heâll be looking for whoever ratted him out, and no one will talk to me again.â
âYou figure Wendell and the Clark kid hooked up somehow, and Grant got the guns from Animal.â
âYeah.â I said. âAnd Animal had taught Grant how to shoot, and, maybe, for whatever reason, Grant taught Clark.â
âThat would make it sort of not spur of the moment,â DiBella said.
âIt would,â I said.
âNo surprise,â DiBella said. âPart of the excitement of something like this is probably the planning and preparation.â
âSo,â I said. âThey decide to do the shooting. They buy guns and ammo from Animal. They practice until theyâre ready. And off they go.â
âYeah?â
âSo,â I said, âassuming Animal didnât give them the guns and ammo because heâs a generous guy, whereâd they get the money?â
âFamilies are well off,â DiBella said. âHell, the Clark family is loaded.â
â âHey, Dad, gimme a couple grand to buy guns and ammoâ?â
âGood point,â DiBella said. âFind out when either or both came up with a chunk of cash, and you got an idea when the gun deal went down.â
âYep.â
âStill donât excite me,â DiBella said. âWe got the shooters. We got their confessions. Los Diablos are Bostonâs problem, and Iâm not sure Animal is a major threat to civil order in Bethel County.â
âAnimal is small change,â I said. âBut I still want to know why.â
âAnd you think if you know why, youâll be able to clear the Clark kid?â DiBella said.
âI wonât know that until I know why,â I said.
DiBella nodded thoughtfully.
âI donât know how smart you are,â he said. âBut Iâll give you stubborn.â
âMay be better than smart,â I said.
âMay be,â DiBella said. âBoth is even better.â
Pearl exhausted the yogurt carton and abandoned the remnants. She came and sat next to me and looked hopeful.
âSo,â DiBella said. âFine. Go to it. But pick up the chewed carton first.â
Which I did. A manâs only as good as his word.
