itâs all good to go, then he can head there tomorrow or the next day.â
Jackson studied her. As soon as possible, theyâd settle a few thingsâlike how the relationship would workâ¦if they had a relationship. He still wasnât sure about that. âShe can be reasonable.â
Alani lifted her chin. âCertainly, I can. But that doesnât meanââ
âYeah, it does.â He would not give on this point.
Dare continued as if the interruption hadnât happened. âAs to that, if folks see the two of you together and know that Alani isnât alone, it might discourage anyone from targeting her.â
âOr make her a target,â Jackson said, grim at the prospect.
Trace shook his head. âNo one can get past youââ
Jackson appreciated the confidence, since Alani didnât seem to share it.
ââand since we donât want to alert anyone that weâre on to them, the ruse of a relationship between the two of you will work as well as anything else.â
Alani licked her lips. âAnyone paying attention will think Jackson is sticking close because weâre involved, not because heâs a protector.â
âExactly.â
âWhen we go back to his place, youâll make sure heâs kept safe?â Alani wanted to know. Jackson said, âWomanâ¦â
His tone didnât faze her. âYouâll be the one under attack if any of this backfires.â
âWeâll be vigilant babysitters,â Trace promised her, cutting short Jacksonâs retort.
Jackson knew theyâd be needling him for a year over Alaniâs misplaced concern. âI can take care of myself, damn it.â
Dare grinned. âI think sheâs more worried about a woman getting to you than anything else.â
Alani looked like she might strangle Dare, but he just laughed at her.
Well now, that was different.
ââS that right, sugar?â Jackson took in the telltale jealousy in her bright eyes. âYou feeling possessive?â
This time he was ready for her when she shoved past him on her way to the door. He didnât stumble a single inch.
âNow that thatâs settled.â Alani grasped the doorknob and looked back in expectation for Dare and Trace to follow. âWell?â
Trace turned to Dare, who let out a long sigh. âYeah, sure, why not? Iâll be a distraction.â Dare went to Alani while Trace went to Jackson.
Alani tried to protest, but Dare still managed to catch her slapping hands. âLetâs take a breath of fresh air. You look like you could use it.â
Jackson watched as Dare practically carried her outside. She mustâve been used to the high-handed treatment, given that she allowed it to happen.
For some reason she glanced back at Jackson as if he was somehow responsible.
Expression hard, Trace leaned in close to Jackson. âNo private visitors.â
âI know.â Already his heart thumped with anticipation. Very soon now heâd have her alone. âIâll play doorman in case anyone does come calling on her.â
âNo unmonitored phone calls, either.â
âI know.â It seemed heâd suffered a combustible cocktail of emotions all dayâlust, need, curiosity and tenderness⦠âIâll vet any and all calls.â
âIf you two decide to go out for anything, make sureââ
âDamn, man.â Jackson shifted his stance. âYou think this is my first rodeo?â
âWith my sister, it is.â Traceâs expression hardened. âAnd even you know that youâre distracted.â
True enough, not that it mattered. âIâd die for her, if it came to that.â
âAnd then sheâd be left unprotected.â Trace put a finger to Jacksonâs chest. âSo no dying.â
Jackson laughed at that somber, direct order. âRight. Got it. Wouldnât be my first
