Chapter 19
T he next night Mary sat in silent misery. She would rather be anywhere but there at the moment. Maurice sat with a coffee and sipped quietly. He was just as she remembered. It was hard to believe he wasn't the same man she remembered before he was turned. Mary recalled the time they spent picnicking under the trees on her family’s estate, their shared passionate kisses. And now there they sat at a 24-hour diner in downtown Detroit, the same place Maurice use to go to troll for his nightly meals.
Mary cleared her throat and sipped her coffee. “I can’t do it, Maurice. Too much has happened; we both need to move on.”
Maurice reached for Mary's hand and she pulled back.
“I was an ass, completely consumed with anger over losing you, but all along you were a Vampire, too. I have tried to be a better person, I have two more Vampire children, and I would love it if you would join me and become part of my family. Together we could make more Vampires, even have children of our own. I love you, Mary.”
Mary couldn't speak. She looked around the diner, and stared out the window that looked out into the street. If she still needed to breathe, she knew she would probably be holding her breath. Children, he had children. They were vampires, but still. They needed guidance , she thought to herself.
    “Please say something, Mary.”
“I don't know what to say!” she said sternly.
“Say you love me and want to be a family.”
“I'm sorry, Maurice, but I just can't. It’s too much. I've moved on. I have a life here.”
“I want to show you something.”
Mary watched as he pulled out several pictures. She took them and started flipping through them. She couldn't believe what she was looking at.
“What is this, some kind of joke?”
“It's real. I have restored your family home in France. We can live there together with my Vampire children and someday children of our own.”
Mary could feel herself tearing up. She wanted to find someone and have children, but Maurice? He wasn't the right person for her.
“I'm sorry, Maurice. My answer is no. I don’t want to see you again. Don’t contact me again,” Mary said sternly. She hoped she conveyed the finality of this statement. She stood up and Maurice stood with her. She took his hand. “You be well and find peace in your life.”
    “Please, Mary, don't do this.”
“It’s done.” She looked at him one last time and left.
Maurice sat back down and in anger slammed his fist on the table, cracking it.

S ally and Connor sat at a table on their second real date. She wore her hair up that evening, revealing her long slender neck. Her dress was a floor length red silk that hugged her lean body, revealing a hint of what was underneath.
As much as Sally talked about moving slowly, she really wanted to rip off his clothes and ride him until the sun came up.
The restaurant was a nice place. It was much more formal, with real tablecloths and waiters who wore tuxedos. In the center of the ceiling was a sparkling crystal chandelier. He told her the owners were sisters and also witches and they made the best Clam Chowder in Michigan. She ordered a bowl along with a salad for her entree. Connor, of course, ordered lots of meat—rare steak along with a prime rib, also rare.
    “Connor, I've been thinking.”
“Oh?” he said, taking a big bite of his bloody steak.
“I'm just not a patient woman. I thought I wanted to move slow, but I can't. I want you; I want you tonight,” Sally blurted out. “Please,” she added. Sally couldn't believe what she’d just said, but she meant it and she didn't care anymore.
Connor swallowed his food in one big gulp and cleared his throat. “I think that would be an excellent idea.”
They continued eating, the sexual tension so thick you could cut it with
