sky beside Oka and Tobi with the sun hot on his back. âWhen Tobi and I were cubs, I thought that there was only sunshine and water in the whole world.â
Lusa gazed calmly into his eyes. âYou must miss Tobi.â
She woke me up to ask about Tobi? Tokloâs paws pricked with irritation. âSo?â
âBut you donât like talking about him.â
âHeâs dead. Thereâs not much to talk about.â
âSo youâre not going to think about him ever again?â Lusa sounded angry.
âNo.â Why did she suddenly care about Tobi?
âAre you never going to think of Chenoa, either?â
âChenoa?â Had a bee flown into Lusaâs ear? âWhat are you talking about?â
âI know why you left her,â Lusa declared. âYou were scared sheâd end up traveling with us, and you donât want to be responsible for another bear.â
âI just want to get home, thatâs all.â
âThen why not let her travel with us? Her legs are as long as mine. She wouldnât hold us up.â
Toklo opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Lusa went on. âYou feel responsible for Tobiâs death, donât you? When Oka drove you away, you thought it was because youâd let him die.â She shook her head fiercely. âThatâs not true. It wasnât your fault he died. It wasnât your fault Ujurak left. And the wolverines attacked me because I ran away, not because you didnât stop them.â
How do you know I feel like that? Toklo stared in astonishment as more words flooded from the black bear.
âYouâre not responsible for us, Toklo. You may be bigger and stronger than me. You may be more used to the forest than Kallik or Yakone. But it doesnât mean you have to protect us from everything. Weâve traveled as far as you, Kallik and I. Weâve seen the same things and survived the same dangers. Our fate is our own. Our lives are not in your paws.â She sat back on her haunches and stared at him. âDo you understand?â
Toklo felt unease tightening his belly. âBut I have to look after you.â
âNo! You donât!â Lusa pressed her muzzle against his cheek. âWe travel with you because youâre good and kind and loyal. Not because we need you to look after us. We look after one another. Youâre not responsible for everyone. And if Chenoa traveled with us, you wouldnât be responsible for her, either.â
Toklo felt suddenly light, his breath coming deeper and easier than it had for a long while. He understood why Lusa had woken him. âYou want me to go back for Chenoa.â
She nodded.
âCan we trust her?â Toklo gazed along the shoreline. âRemember Nanulak? I trusted him, but he lied from the start.â
Lusa shrugged. âThat was Nanulak, not Chenoa. Chenoa hasnât asked us for anything. But youâve seen how Hakan bullies her. And you know that if he keeps blaming her for their motherâs death, sheâll never stop grieving.â
Something seemed to loosen in Tokloâs chest.
Lusa pressed on. âShe needs our help, Toklo.â
âBut Iâm going home.â Toklo dipped his head. âWhatâs going to happen to Chenoa when I get there?â
âSheâll still have me.â Lusa stared at him. âShe can help me find my home.â
Toklo blinked. He hadnât thought about what would happen to Lusa when he reached the mountains. He stiffened. Lusa alone? But not if Chenoa was with them . . . His belly tightened. âIâll go back for her.â
âIâm coming, too.â Lusa paced in front of him.
âNo.â Toklo was firm. âYouâre injured. Besides, Chenoa already trusts me. Sheâll believe me when I tell her she canât waste her life trying to make Hakan happy.â
Along the shore, Kallik and Yakone got to their paws and
