I can do this! Celeste felt indignant that Yipp didn’t believe in her, but she was damned sure of herself. She may not have slept with a lot of men, but she hadn’t met one yet that didn’t collapse after a few love-making sessions. They all grew sleepy afterward. Granted, most of them were that way after the very first time and had no energy left for seconds, but as weak as Loki had seemed she felt sure it wouldn’t take but one more go to put him out.

‘Yipp—’ She felt him break the link with her. ‘Damn it Yipp! Don’t do this! I won’t leave without you! I won’t! The plan will work. It has to work,’ she screamed internally, but there was no response at all from her familiar.
It was so unlike Yipp to sound that frightened. She tried to link again with him, but all she got was silence. Since she still sensed his presence and felt no imminent danger around him, she decided he had just succumbed to exhaustion and passed out again.
That, or he’s just ignoring me out of spite. Which was a distinct possibility. He never liked it when she tried to assert herself. In all the years they had been together, he never once considered that she had the right to tell him what to do. It was her own fault, according to her Master. She was supposed to control Yipp — he was her familiar.
The thing was, she didn’t consider that she had the right to control him any more than he considered she did. She loved him too much, and forcing him to do things just made it seem like he was a slave.
Like I am now? It was an unpleasant thought, but she couldn’t argue with her situation. She’d just had sex with a demon. Never mind that it had been the best sex she had ever had, or that she had her own plans and reasons behind the act, the fact remained that he was holding her captive. His expectations that she would follow orders made her his slave.
Not yet. Not if I can get us out of here. Yipp didn’t believe she could do it.
What does he know, anyway? Although his last words confused her, she decided to concentrate on her escape plan. There would be plenty of time to argue the point as soon as Yipp was safely out of the cage and they were far from Loki and his camp.
Her mind still reeling from Yipp’s warning, she turned and stopped dead when she saw Loki standing only a foot away from her with a bottle in one hand and two goblets in the other. His face was hard, his expression unreadable. He stared down at her, and she felt a shiver of fear run down her spine.
“Oh you’re back.” She gave him her brightest smile, but it quickly fell away as she met those stormy black eyes. What now?
It was as if he were contemplating something, but was unsure how to go about it. Celeste sat up on her knees and covered herself with her arms, feeling more naked than she could attribute to a simple lack of clothing. He made no move to come closer and it seemed like an eternity before he finally moved and knelt down next to her.
Loki reached around her, grabbed the forgotten bread and cheese, and tore off a chunk of each, handing them to her. He then poured some wine into both of the goblets and gave one to her. She choked down the bread and cheese, appetite definitely gone, and washed it down with the entire contents of her goblet in a few gulps. When she tried to hand the goblet back to Loki, he simply sat staring straight ahead, not even acknowledging her presence as he ate and drank his fill.
For some odd reason the dismissal stung Celeste more than it should have. What’s wrong with him? Something was definitely not right. A few moments ago, he was eating out of her hand, genuinely smiling even. Now ….
