âTo sell your puppies,â she says.
âSell them?â Harry laughs. âWhoâd take any of Uselessâ mutts? Theyâre not even pure bred. And everybody around here knows where those pups came from: wouldnât touch them with a barge pole.â
âBut Harry,â Gull says persisting, âI think I know a way to make sure they go to a good home. And make money too.â
Harry looks seriously at Gull. Plopping the eggs into eggcups beside the toast and tea, he and Gull sit down opposite each other at the table. âNow tell me how you propose working this magic?â
Twenty minutes later, Helen finds Gull and Harry deep in conversation over their breakfast. âAnd what scheme would you two be cooking up?â she asks as she pours herself a cup of tea.
âNot one of my wild schemes for a change,â Harry says shaking his head, his hands in the air. âItâs all Gullâs doing. I think sheâs mad, of course. And I canât see how anyone will believe her. But sheâs determined. So, what more can I say?â
âThis is all very mysterious,â Helen says sitting down beside Gull. âAre you going to tell me?â
âNot until Iâve proved Harry wrong,â Gull answers, her jaw set.
âThatâs the spirit,â Helen laughs. âWe all love to prove Harry wrong,â she says giving her husband a cheeky grin.
âThis wouldnât have anything to do with that âpuppy pieâ business now, would it?â Harry asks, looking keenly at her.
Gull smiles slowly, her eyes twinkling. âMaybe. Maybe not,â she says as she picks up the last piece of toast, gets up and runs out of the kitchen laughing. In the hallway, she stops. Staring at the family photos, she studies each in turn until she reaches the one nearest the front door. âDonât know why I keep looking at all of you,â she says to herself. âYou seem to have some sort of hold over me.â She sighs as she keeps gazing at the last photo. âMaybe I just wish you could speak and tell me all about yourselves: about your lives at the Folly. I wish you could talk.â
Dragging herself away from the photos, she runs up the stairs while downstairs in the kitchen, Helen is quizzing Harry about Gullâs early appearance.
âWhatâs that all about?â Helen asks. âNo, donât tell me. Itâs Gullâs secret.â She laughs. âNow I can see the resemblance between you two,â she says to Harry. âYouâve both got those Hepplewhite twinkling eyes, full of mischief.â
Now itâs Harryâs turn to laugh. âI think Gull really believes that, if times get tough, Iâd be tempted to make puppy pie.â
âNo,â Helen scoffs. âYou wouldnât, would you?â she asks teasing.
âWell,â Harry groans, âweâll have to find homes for them quickly. Because,â he says looking away into the distance, âmy latest venture is causing much more hard work than I ever expected.â
âItâs not your fault,â Helen says, reaching out and holding his hand. âI mean, you did all the research and thereâs nothing to explain whatâs happening to this crop. All the books said hemp has no natural predators. Who knows, if youâd sown wheat or cotton, the same thing probably would have happened. Anything new or different is bound to have teething problems.â
âIf thatâs the case, I should have been the only one growing it. At least for the first season or two.â
âYou know there wouldnât have been enough to pay off the overdraft,â Helen says gently. âListen to me Harry, I really feel something good will come out of this in the end.â
âIs this one of your prophecies?â he asks hopefully.
âA bit of that,â she answers. âAnd a lot of faith in you.â
âRather have
