pointed up at the ceiling.
âWell done, Lola!â said Felix. âAnd the stolen plans are inside.â
Lola smiled at Felix.
Then she thought for a moment. It seemed that they had two problems.
âFirst, we need to get up there to open the safe,â she said. âThen we need to work out the code to get into it.â
Felix nodded. âThere is a key pad on the safe with letters, not numbers,â he said. âSo it must be a code word .â
Lola thought about that.
âIâve got an idea. Letâs see which letters on the key pad have been used the most.â
âWeâll never see from down here,â said Buddy, staring up at the roof.
âOf course we will,â said Lola, kneeling down. âWeâll use the mirror.â
They huddled around the mirror on the floor.
Buddy gave a cry when he saw himself in the mirror. âTwist my toggle ! What happened to me?â
âOh sorry, Buddy!â groaned Lola. âMy brother thought glasses and a moustache would suit you.â
Felix smiled at Buddy. âI thought it was your new look, friend. I rather like it.â Buddy took another look, then turned to Lola. âHmmmpppphh!â was all he said.
Lola turned back to look at the letters again, trying not to laugh.
âThe most worn letters will make up the code word,â she said extra seriously.
Most of the letters looked brand-new. But sure enough, some looked a little worn.
âI think itâs C , L , A , S , P and I . And definitely T .â
Felix pulled out a piece of paper.
Lola wrote the letters down. Buddy watched over her shoulder.
Buddy studied the letters. â CLASPIT !â he cried.
â CLASPIT ?â said Felix. âWhat does that mean?â
âTangled laces, youâre right!â said Buddy. âIt should be a real word. Hang on.â He went back to studying the letters.
â SALTPIC !â he cried next.
âBuddy,â said Lola. âCan you make an actual word from these letters?â
âLet me see. Yes ⦠yes ⦠yes. Um, no.â Buddy shook his head sadly.
âDid we miss a letter?â asked Felix.
Lola stared at the key pad again. âI donât think so,â she said.
Lola was quiet for a few moments.
She arranged the letters this way and that. Then she smiled and wrote something new down. She held up the paper for them to see.
âOh, youâre good, Lola,â said Felix, smiling. âYouâre very good.â
And what Lola had written?
PLASTIC .
Felix was delighted. Buddy turned a quick cartwheel. Lola was happy too, but something still didnât feel quite right.
âOK,â said Buddy. âWe have the code word. Now how do we reach the key pad to type it in?â
âWeâll never climb up there,â said Felix. âToo high.â
âAnyone carrying a spare ladder?â joked Buddy.
âWeâre not carrying anything ,â said Lola.
Buddy checked his pockets.
âLooking for these?â Felix asked. In his paws were three juggling balls. âYou lent them to me, remember?â
âAre you thinking what Iâm thinking?â grinned Buddy, taking the balls from Felix.
Felix nodded. âYou can hit the letters from down here.â
âSo thatâs why you called me!â said Buddy, an even bigger clown grin on his face than usual.
Felix clapped his friend on the back. âIf anyone can do this, itâs you.â
âBuddy the juggler, at your service!â said the clown.
He started to juggle.
He was really good. Lola was always surprised at how clever her favourite toy was.
Slowly, Buddy started to send the balls higher. And higher.
Almost to the ceiling.
âIâm ready to give it a try,â called Buddy.
He was about to aim the first ball at the letter P , when Lola suddenly pushed him aside.
âStop!â she cried.
The balls fell to the floor. Buddy
