just kept stabbing it hoping it would make the doors open faster.
“Wait dammit!”
“Wait for what Davis! We’ve only been married for a few weeks and you’re already running back to her?”
“That was not what it looked like.”
“Really? It looked like she was in your arms and that you were telling her you’d always care about her.”
“Nicole, you’ve got to trust me on this. It was not what it looked like. I didn’t do anything wrong I’m just trying to help a friend.”
Nicole looked at him incredulously. “Are you serious? A ‘friend’. That’s the best you’ve got! You’ve been pinning for Anne for years and you expect me to believe that?”
The elevator opened and Nicole remembered she was holding the bag with his dinner in it. She threw it on the floor, got on the elevator and pressed the down button. She wouldn’t allow the tears to well up in her eyes until after the doors closed.
Davis was so angry he wanted to hit something. While he was standing in the hall staring at the elevators, Anne stood back in his office and listened to the entire exchange. She couldn’t believe her luck. Anne couldn’t have planned this out better if she’d tried. Thank goodness, she was still friends with Davis’s personal assistant. Otherwise, when she’d called her last week to find out about his schedule, she wouldn’t have gotten the scoop that someone was stealing company secrets and selling them to some unsavory characters. That’s when her plan started to take shape. Add to it, that little Ms. Nicole was the jealous type. Well, she was definitely going to give her something to be jealous about. Her plan to win Davis back might just be easier than she’d originally thought.
Davis returned to his office.
“I’m so sorry Davis. I hope I didn’t cause any trouble because that is the last thing I wanted to do.”
“It’s not your fault. She’ll cool off after a while. Look, leave those documents with me and I’ll get started on trying to untangle you from this mess. I’ll be adding extra security to you. I’ll call you with the details.”
“Thank you so much.” Anne kissed him on the cheek. She lingered awhile around his mouth hoping he’d kiss her deeply. When he didn’t, she slowly turned around, smiled, and walked out of his office. Davis thought about kissing her but couldn’t do that to Nicole. She didn’t deserve it. Maybe he’d better give her some time to cool off before he went home. Then, he thought better of it, shut down his computer, and left the office.
Chapter 18
When Davis opened the door to their bedroom, Nicole was already in bed with her back turned to him.
“I know you’re not sleeping. Do you think we can talk rationally about what happened tonight?”
“I was NOT being irrational.”
“There is nothing going on between Anne and me. She came to me for help with a problem. I was comforting her Nicole. That’s all.”
Nicole sat up, “Why you? Can’t she find someone else to help her? How would you feel if you’d walked in on me and one of my exes Davis?”
Davis yanked off his shirt and tie. “Nicole, I’m not going to explain to you again about what happened tonight. You can either believe it or not. At this point, it is your choice and you’re going to have to figure out how to deal with it. I’m tired and I’m going to bed.”
*****
Two days had gone by without either of them really speaking to one another. Davis spent long days and nights at work trying to avoid the situation. On the third day, he’d had enough. He needed to figure out how to make things right with Nicole. He hadn’t realized how stubborn she could be and thought she’d crack by now. She was right, if he’d walked in on her in another man’s arms he would have strangled the guy to death. Davis smiled to himself and picked up the phone to call the florist. He had some serious groveling
