Iâll sell all two hundred. Easy. This party is gonna make me RICH!â
Feenman clicked the flashlight on. He frowned at it and clicked it again. âBernie,â he said, âthis flashlight doesnât work.â
âYouâve got to slap it a few times,â I said. âWhat do you want for a dollar?â
Feenman slapped the end of the flashlight, and the light flickered on. âCool,â he said. âWhatâs in the other box?â
I tugged open the carton and pulled out a sweatshirt. âYou know how cold it gets late at night. Iâm gonna sell at least a hundred of theseâat five dollars each.â
âWow,â Feenman said. âLet me see the front.â
I held up the sweatshirt. It had a big picture of my smiling face on it. And it read: I PARTIED ALL NIGHT WITH BERNIE!
âFeenman,â I said, âcan anyone resist a sweatshirt like this? Of course not.â
I folded up the sweatshirt and dropped it back into the carton. âKids will also want to buy the flashlights so they can see their new sweatshirts! Itâs a perfect combo!â
âBrilliant!â Feenman cried. âBernie, youâre a genius!â
âWeâll be rich. RICH!â I cried. âAll of us dudes at Rotten Houseâweâll be rolling in money! Of course, Iâm only doing this for my guys.â
Feenman scratched his head. âYou mean youâre gonna share the money with us?â
âMaybe five or ten dollars,â I said. âDonât thank me, Feenman. I know Iâm too generous . Itâs my biggest fault.â
I dragged Belzer to his feet. âTake the boxes to the dorm,â I said. âAnd be careful with them. I spent three monthsâ allowance on this stuff.â
âHunh-hunh.â Belzer staggered off with the cartons. Good kid, Belzer.
Feenman shook his head. âBernie, you spent three monthsâ allowance? What if no girl asks you to the All-Nighter? Youâre totally sunk .â
I put a hand on his shoulder. âAre you kidding? A dozen girls are dying to ask me. Maybe two dozen. But theyâre holding themselves back. Because they know April-May June wants to ask me first.â
And then I saw her crossing the grass. I saw her blond ponytail bobbing in the sunlight. Her blue eyes sparkling, her mouth in a happy smile.
Was she thinking about me ?
âTake a lesson, Feenman,â I said. âWatch how I allow April-May to ask me to the party.â
I took off, trotting to catch up to her.
Chapter 4
T HREE N OSTRILS ?
âApril-Mayâhi!â I called. âWait up!â
She kept walking. I guess she didnât hear me.
âWait up!â
She walked a little faster. She probably didnât know it was me.
I had to run full speed. I caught up with her and spun her around. I flashed her my most adorable smile, the one with the dimples. âHi ya, babes. Whussup?â
She gave me a warm greeting. âTake a hike, Pond Scum.â
I laughed. âDid anyone ever tell you that you have an awesome sense of humor?â
She pulled a fat wad of pink bubble gum from her mouth and stuck it onto my forehead.
I know what it means when girls tease you that way. It means they really like you !
âApril-May, you look totally excellent today,â I said.
âYou look like the breakfast I just threw up,â she replied.
I laughed again. âFunny. I love a good laugh in the morning.â
âWant a good laugh, Bernie? Go look in a mirror!â she said.
I had to run again to catch up to her. I knew all her hard-to-get tricks.
âYouâre so shy,â I said. âDonât be ashamed. Iâm shy, too.â
She pulled the bubble gum off my forehead and shoved it back into her mouth.
âI know how much you want to ask me to the All-Nighter,â I said. âSo donât be shy. Just go ahead and ask me.â
She rolled her beautiful eyes.
