âDid you meet anyone else on Sunday?â asked Antony. âWho were you dancing with? I canât remember. Got too out of it later and blasted those particular brain cells.â
I hesitated, not sure if I should tell him. He might tell Debbie and I didnât want to short-circuit the whole thing, whatever kind of thing it was. Yet even as I thought this, I could hear my mouth saying âBilly Ryan.â
âBilly! Thatâs right, I remember now. You are a fast worker.â He narrowed his eyes and did some eyebrow dancing. âOr did he hit on you?â
âWell, he dragged me onto the dance floor and put his tongue in my mouth.â
Antony sighed deeply.
âWhatâs wrong? Is he notorious for snogging girls he hardly knows?â
âNo, heâs not notorious, itâs just that through Debbie, I know a bit more about Billy than most people. Heâs a lovely guy, but heâs rather confused. What happened between you two?â
I told him. I made it into a funny story, complete with me falling asleep with a mouth full of crisps. I waited for the HA HA HAâit didnât come. Another bottle of champagne did and Antony looked uncharacteristically serious. The dancing brows were meeting in a frown.
âGeorgia, Iâve only know you five minutes, but I really like you. We are going to be friends. I donât make new friends very often, but when I meet someone and we click, thatâs it. So Iâm going to tell you exactly why Billy behaved the way he did, because I donât want you to be disappointed.â
I felt a bit sick. âIs he gay?â At least I got a laugh that time. âNo, he is not gay. It would be easier if he was. No, Billyâs problem is that heâs in love with his own brotherâs wife.â
âHeâs what? I donât believe this town. His best friend is Rory Stewart, whose brother was engaged to Debbie Brent, who is Billyâs cousin . . . oh, I give up . . .â
âIt gets better. Or worse. The woman Billy is in love withâthe one married to his brother, Tomâis . . . wait for it . . . Roryâs sister.â
âRoryâs sister ? Hang on, doesnât that also make her the sister of Debbieâs dead fiancé?â
Antony nodded.
âThis is ridiculous. Youâll have to draw me a Venn diagram. Is everyone in Sydney related?â
âPretty much. At the top end of âsocietyâ they are, anyway. The Ryans, the Stewarts and the Brents are three big country families. They all grew up together. That awful plane crash makes the whole thing seem a lot more gothic, but theyâve all been marrying each other for a hundred years. Thatâs why Debbieâs ghastly little common mother was a good thingâsome fresh blood. Debbie and Drewâs children would have been really something, but I think it will be good if she marries outside the clans now.â
âBut hang on, tell me more about Billy. Heâs in love with his sister-in-law, Roryâs sister. Whatâs her name, anyway?â
âElizabeth Ryan, née Stewartâknown as Lizzy.â
âIs this Lizzy in love with Billy?â
âYes.â
âAre they doing something about it?â
Antony nodded as he drained his glass.
âDoes her husbandâhang on, Billyâs brother âknow?â
âNo. Tom doesnât know about them, but he does know something weird is going on.â
This was incredible. âDoes Rory know?â
âYes.â
âHow does he feel about it?â
âHeâs not very happy about it, but he doesnât say anything. Remember, his sister is his last living sibling and she suffered a lot after the crash too. I guess he reckons itâs herâerâaffair, so he and Billy just never talk about it. They both pretend itâs not happening. Thatâs why Billy kissed you like thatâto show Rory
