cigarette? The way he stands? Thatâs him for sure. That son of a bitch busted me between shows! I was out in the alley and I had just lit a joint, and here comes this big asshole with his stripper chick. He sees me and wants to impress her. Next thing I know, Iâm in handcuffs and spending the night in jail.â
Spangler pushed his hat back, and Clovis got a better look.
âSee? Thatâs him! Heâs got a tattoo on the back of his hand.â
âWhatâs his name again?â
âHis name is Bruce Spangler. Iâd know that face anywhere. If an American narc is involved in the Redlands bust, you know something is rotten somewhere.â
Brian had been watching over their shoulders.
âWouldnât you know it? Thatâs Nobby Pilcher standing next to him.â
They all crowded around the TV.
Anita said, âThe News of the World âs favorite detective sergeant.â
âThe bastard,â Brian mumbled.
Brian seemed on the verge of a nervous fit. His breathing had become rapid and shallow. His asthma flared. Sweat bloomed on his forehead. He twitched.
Clovis said, âIf those two have joined forces, itâs gonna be a very bad scene, man.â
Brian rasped, âI must be next. Weâve got to get out of here.â
Bobby tried to be the voice of reason.
âBut where can you go?â
The telephone rang, jarring them back to reality. When Brian and Anita made no move to pick it up, Bobby acted as valet.
âHello?â
The voice on the other end was instantly recognizable with its thick Scouse accent.
âDust Bin Bob? What are you doing at Brianâs house answering the phone like a common career girl?â
Bobby recoiled.
âJohn? Is that you?â
John Lennonâs voice could be incredibly funny at times, especially when he delivered his deadpan punch lines.
âNo, itâs the Duke of Prunes, Dusty. Iâm just checking to see if Brianâs getting enough fiber.â
âI just happened to be standing here next to the phone. Brian and Anita are packing.â
John cleared his throat.
âGood, because itâs you I want to talk to. Thanks for hanging out with Brian. He hates to be alone and heâs too trusting of people. The cops are on the warpath lately. Itâs a recipe for disaster. If he should get busted and go to jail, heâll freak out. I believe heâs actually capable of suicide.â
Bobby interrupted. âJohn, I understand, but really, I canât be his minder twenty-four hours a day. I have my own life. Remember, as soon as the strike is over, Iâm flying to Baltimore to be with my wife and son.â
John waited a beat. âPlease keep an eye on Brian while youâre still here. I sense something terrible is coming. Do it as favor to me.â
Bobby let the words sink in.
âI will. But I wonât be around much longer.â
âMaybe Clovis could keep an eye on Brian after youâre gone. Everybody loves Clovis.â
âWhy donât you ask him? Heâs standing right next to me.â
âJolly good! Let me talk to him.â
Bobby handed Clovis the phone.
âItâs John Lennon.â
Clovis smiled and took the phone, half expecting it to be a joke. âThereâs three words I thought Iâd never hear.â
He brought he phone to his mouth and pressed the earpiece against his head. âWhatâs up, Johnny?â
Johnâs accent left no doubt.
âWhen Dust Bin Bob goes back to Baltimore, would you keep an eye on Brian for me?â
âSure, man. No problemo.â
âYou saw what happened at Redlands. Letâs make sure it doesnât happen to Brian.â
âWill do.â
âConsiderate it a personal favor to me.â
âYou got it, pardner.â
Clovis hung up and looked at Bobby.
âEasy as pie, see?â
âI hope you didnât bite off more than you can chew just now. This
