her in her tracks before she unpacks my barely there underwear right in front of my boss.  “No, no don’t bother with that. I will take care of it later.  I will just go hang the gown and put the bag with the other, um, items in it in the bathroom as well.    Wouldn’t want this beautiful gown to wrinkle.”  With that I scoop everything up and practically run into the bathroom.  After carefully hanging the dress and storing the other bag, I make my way back into the office to see Marlene making her way into the elevator.
“I apologize for my mother.  She can be a handful at times.  But well, what can I say?  She’s my mom.  But she does design some beautiful clothes; I can hardly wait to see what you found.”  And there’s that panty-dropping smile again.  Is he flirting with me?  I feel the blush creep into my cheeks as he continues, “How did you end up at MJ Designs this morning of all places?”
“Oh , my roommate is a model and has worked with her in various shows though not recently.  Anyway he took me over there first; saying if I couldn’t find a gown there then I was truly a lost cause.”
His eyebrows knit together and something like anger flashes in his eyes before he recovers himself.  “Your roommate?  Might I presume then that it was him and his mother you went to the spa with this morning?” I nod in the affirmative, my eyes becoming firmly fixed on my shoes.  “And is he the man you were at the club with last night?”  This is the first mention he has made of our, um, meeting the night before and he looks none too happy about any of it.
“Yes, Gavin, my roommate ,” I try to emphasize the word, “took me all around this morning to get ready for tonight.  And yes, he was with me at the club last night.  I want to apologize for that.  I had apparently celebrated my new job a little too much before we got there.  I would not normally behave that way toward you.”  I blush again and chew my lower lip knowing that I have behaved far worse with him and had no alcohol fueled state to blame it on.  “I hope you know that and don’t hold it against me.”  And I hope we can just forget about the first night altogether, I add silently.  It’s only my first half-day and already that encounter is making everything beyond awkward.
“Well other than a couple issues, I thought last night was wonderful.”  He said in return.  I wondered which parts were the wonderful ones and which were the ones he regretted.  It probably wouldn’t take too long to guess at the latter. “Just in the future, if your roommate decides to take you out to celebrate would you please let me know so that I can send Connor to watch over you?  Gavin ,” he says it like it’s a dirty word, “doesn’t appear to be very concerned with what happens to you when you are out with him.”
What the hell?  I feel like telling him that he is just my boss despite what ’s happened and he’s made it perfectly clear that that is all he wants to be.  So how is it his business if I go out and how I get home?  My first day on the job is probably not the time to address this issue though.
Feeli ng protective of Gavin, I say, “I don’t think that’s necessary really.  And please before you judge him, you should know that Gav always looks out for me.  It was my fault things got so out of hand with stubble guy.  I didn’t realize he was moving me away from Gavin while we were dancing and he got stuck in the crowd.  Plus he thought since I wasn’t protesting that maybe I wanted some time… Oh never mind.  Anyway, then later when I was going home, he was giving me instructions loud enough to make sure the cabbie heard so if there was anything weird Gav would know exactly who to go after.  So please don’t be angry with him; he was truly looking out for me.”
I didn’t realize it but at some point in my little speech , I placed my hand on his arm in a comforting gesture.  When I pulled
