stuff...”
Dan touched Macy’s shoulder and she dropped it, wiggling, not wanting him to touch her. Dan’s grip came again, tighter, sending false pain through Macy’s body, igniting all those old memories she wished would just die for good.
“I gave you... everything...”
“Stop it,” Macy said.
She somehow found the strength to turn around. She did it not to face Dan but to find out what the hell Derreck was doing. He just stood there, behind his desk, waiting.
Waiting for what?
Macy had an evil man inches from her body, his fake smile but truthful eyes burning at her.
“You took the ring,” Dan said.
“That’s all it was,” Macy said. “A ring. I regretted taking it, but it didn’t come with a proposal.”
Dan growled. Low enough that only Macy could hear. It took her back again, to places where the same situation lived out. Dan finding ways to hurt her in public without a single person knowing. Giving her previews of what waited when they got home together.
“Help me,” Macy said, her eyes looking at Derreck. “Please, Derreck...”
“No, no,” Dan said, “this is our business, Macy. You took my ring and left.”
Macy shook her head.
“Okay, that’s enough,” Derreck finally spoke. “Mr. Anderson, come back here.”
Dan put a hand out. “Just wait.”
Macy gasped.
Derreck’s lip snarled.
“I don’t wait,” Derreck said.
“You deal with Macy, you’ll learn.” Dan’s full attention was back to Macy. “You at least owe me a reason, don’t you? Some kind of truth.”
Macy shuddered, the fear pinching all her nerves. She felt stings of pain from her feet to her ears. She almost wished for Dan to hit her, just get it over with, like it used to be. She could just close her eyes, wait it out, and go on with her life.
“Everything I gave you,” Dan said, “and now you show up here. My dream interview. And you’re going to fucking ruin it.”
The anger flared in Dan just as Derreck stepped behind him. Derreck grabbed Dan’s arm and pulled. As Dan twisted around, Macy saw him load up his fist, ready to swing. Derreck reached down faster than Dan could throw a punch. Derreck’s hand was much larger than Dan’s and he palmed his fist, tightening it enough to make Dan’s knuckles to pop.
“Is this about a ring?” Derreck asked.
“I gave a ring with a promise and the promise was broken,” Dan said, “how would you feel?”
“Good point.”
Derreck released his grip. He walked back to his desk. Macy felt dead and alone. At his desk he opened the top drawer and to Macy’s surprise, he took out cash.
Cash.
Hundred dollar bills.
“How much?” Derreck asked.
“Excuse me?” Dan replied. “What are you...”
“Mr. Anderson, I can see you have a hell of a temper. I won’t deal with someone in my company like yourself. You’re a loose canon, aren’t you? And better yet... why are you interviewing with my company when your father is one of the top accountants and investors in the country?”
Dan’s face turned red.
“He kicked you out, I bet. Cut you off. Because you’re a baby. Probably the kind of man who can face a woman but not a man.”
Macy felt the urge to smile.
“So, here’s the way to solve everyone’s problems,” Derreck continued. “I’m going to give you the money for the ring and then you’re going to leave this building and this city. I own most of the city and if I hear you’re still here, I’ll personally come and take this money back and make you disappear.”
“Are you threatening me?” Dan asked.
“Do you feel threatened?”
“Maybe I do,” Dan said.
“Well, that’s your opinion. How much for the ring?”
“A thousand,” Dan said without hesitation.
“That’s it? A beautiful woman like Macy is only worth a thousand dollar ring?” Derreck shook his head. He laid out ten one hundred dollar bills on his desk, then
