tell you, if you can believe it!â Skye could not keep the delight from her voice.
Mrs. Chambers added, âSheâs been making some very good choices lately, and I think she should tell you about them herself. Go on, Sooze.â
Mrs. Bodmer crossed her arms. âWell, what is it?â She stared glumly at her daughter.
Sooze leaned forward slowly and rested her elbows on her knees. âIâve been learning all kinds of stuff at the Chambersâ house, Mom, to help me get my head together. Theyâve been telling me about God, and a few weeks ago, I asked Jesus Christ to come into my life.â
âAnd what does that mean?â Mrs. Bodmer barked, running her free hand through her frizz. âDonât tell me you got religion now! Thatâs all I need to hear!â
âItâs not religion, Mrs. Bodmer,â Mrs. Chambers said. âItâs a personal relationship with God â the creator of the universe. When someone accepts what Christ did for us on the cross as Sooze did, God makes that person new, inside and out. Sooze is a different person now.â
âYeah,â Skye added. âI accepted Christ too, and Iâve only been in trouble once since then. God gives â â
âHey!â Mrs. Bodmer snapped. âI told you the last time that I didnât want to hear any of this God junk. My kid still have that tumor in her head? Huh? Look how much good Godâs doing her! Now if thatâs all you came to talk about, thereâs the door!â
âBut, Mom,â Sooze pleaded, âyou donât understand. This is different. If youâd just listen â â
âThatâs it! No more. You got no business coming into my house and cramming this religion stuff down my throat.â Mrs. Bodmer blew a short blast of smoke out her nose and scowled at Sooze. âAnd Iâm surprised at you for falling for this baloney, Susan. Whatâs the matter with you?â
âMom,â Soozeâs voice cracked, âGod is real â and he loves you!â
âEasy, Sooze,â Mrs. Chambers warned.
âYeah, and pigs can fly!â Mrs. Bodmerâs face turned beat red. âIf thatâs all you came to tell me, Iâm not interested. Let me repeat it, so itâs nice and clear. Iâm not interested â period!â
âIâm sorry to hear that.â Mrs. Chambers stood and zipped her coat. âAll right, girls, I think itâs time to go. But, Mrs. Bodmer, would you consider doing one thing for Sooze?â
âWhat?â Mrs. Bodmer said gruffly.
âThanksgiving is in a few weeks. Would you come to our place for dinner? Weâll have turkey and all the trimmings. If you like football, Tom will have games on all afternoon.â
âYeah,â Skye agreed. âWeâd love to have you. Wouldnât we, Sooze?â
âPlease, Mom. I could show you my bedroom and the barn and the horse I ride.â
âWeâll even come to pick you up,â Mrs. Chambers added.
âIâm busy!â Mrs. Bodmer fired back.
âWe were never busy before on Thanksgiving,â Sooze said. âWe always ate frozen dinners and watched TV.
Whatâs different this year?â
âI told you Iâm busy. Thanks, but no thanks.â Mrs. Bodmer turned on the TV.
âThen how about Christmas?â Mrs. Chambers said loudly.
âIâm busy!â Mrs. Bodmer said even louder without thinking twice. âIâm just busy!â
Skye and Sooze followed Mrs. Chambers into the back of the Booster Club stand at the football stadium. In a red apron, Mr. Chambers stood at the stoves and labored over French fries in troughs of hot grease. Morgan sat in a corner peeling potatoes. Two adults at the front counter were selling fries like they were made of gold.
âHey, itâs about time you got here to help.â Mr. Chambers smiled when he saw his wife.
