Romance?â I dug my fingers into my hair. âEmily, this is stupid! You shouldnât have to change for anybody .â
She crossed her arms over her chest. âChloe likes him too. The only way I can compete with her is to be Trevorâs dream girl.â
âDream? Youâre acting like a nightmare,â I scoffed.
Emily looked dumbstruck. âFor your information, I learned this behavior from you !â She poked me in the shoulder. Hard.
My jaw dropped, but I quickly drew it back up. âFine. Then let me teach you something else! â
Before she could react, I grabbed Emily in a headlock and dragged her to the drinking fountain.
âAugh! Let go! Youâll mess up my wig!â She squealed and slapped at my arms.
âWeâre washing that eye makeup off,â I said. âIf weâre lucky, maybe some of your crazy will rinse away too.â
Someone turned the knob of the classroom door, and I instantly released her.
âIs everything okay?â asked Trevor, stepping into the hallway. âI heard screaming.â
âEverythingâs fine,â I said. âEmily was just singing an Ankle Biters song for me.â I bumped her shoulder. âWhy donât you sing it for Trevor?â
Emilyâs face, which had been red from our struggle, turned redder still. âOh, I donât think he wants, um â¦â She laughed nervously. âItâs better with music.â
He smiled and nodded toward the door. âCome on. Class is about to start.â
Emily let her shoulders relax and gave a cocky half-smile, and sauntered into the classroom. I followed, searching for something large enough to knock her unconscious.
âHello, Champs!â boomed Ms. Success as we got seated. âI hope your last few days have been almost as riveting as this interview I did.â She held up a copy of Loud Women . âDonât let the name fool you,â she said to a chorus of giggles. âPeople who make the most noise get the most attention.â
âAnd the most spit in their food at restaurants,â I whispered to Trevor.
He snickered into his hand, and Ms. Success whipped around to look at us.
âAlexis â¦â She pointed at me, and I knew I was busted.
âYes, maâam?â I said in my meekest voice.
âOur lesson today is leadership,â said Ms. Success. âI understand you know a little something about that.â
Everyone swiveled to look at me, including my brothers. That was not what Iâd expected her to say.
âS-sorry?â I asked.
âThe hockey boosters,â said Ms. Success. âChloe tells me you jumped right into a leadership role when you joined.â
âOh!â I hadnât thought of it that way, but I had taken charge of the boosters that morning.
Ms. Success gave me a thumbs-up. âIâm thrilled that my wisdom sank in so fast. Now, for the rest of youâ¦.â
Trevor nudged me while Ms. Success started the lesson. âWay to go!â
âThanks,â I told him, glancing at Chloe.
She had turned partially in her chair and smiled when she saw me looking. I smiled back.
Maybe I had other girls figured out wrong. Maybe the slumber party wouldnât be so terrible. Maybe â¦
Chloeâs glance drifted to Trevor. Over her shoulder, I could see Emily frowning at them both.
Maybe I needed to bring riot gear.
Chapter 9
S aturday night Dad drove me and my cake to Chloeâs. Even before I got out of the car, we could hear squeals and laughter accompanied by bad, bad singing.
Dad cleared his throat. âAre you sure you want to do this?â
âOh, yeah!â I said with way more enthusiasm than either of us found believable. âI mean, itâll be fine. I should really try this socializing thing.â
He kissed my forehead. âIâm proud of you. Have fun.â
