door of the politicianâs bedroom.
âCome in,â a weak voice called.
Katie opened the door to find Clara lying in bed, face pale, eyes closed. âHow are you feeling?â
âTerrible. Iâm sorry about the caviar. I know itâs expensive, but my stomach just canât handle it right now. I know the request was extravagant. Iâll have my people send you a check.â
âThat would be deeply appreciated.â Ordinarily, Katie wouldnât accept the offer, but this wasnât a normal purchase.
âYou and the others can eat it.â
âActually, they tried it and didnât like it, and before I could get to it, Cleo helped herself.â
Clara opened her eyes. âThe cat?â
âThe cat.â That was fifty dollars down the drain. Or down the cat.
âI hope she enjoyed it.â Katie could swear that she saw Claraâs lips twitch.
âSeemed to.â Katie cleared her throat. She hated to suggest this, because it would mean a trip to town with Clara. Their celebrity politician needed to stay out of sight, but if she was ill, she needed to see a physician. âWould you like for me to take you to a doctor? Little Bush has a clinic.â
Clara shook her head. âTottie was just in here with a handful of zinc and vitamin C.â She indicated an empty mug. âShe brought some kind of tea. I donât know what it was, but it tasted good. She said it would help the nausea.â
âAh. Well, Tottie knows her teas.â She had a great store of herbal lore passed down from mother to daughter, generation to generation, part of her Cherokee heritage. âIf you change your mind, let me know.â
âIâll be all right. Itâs just a bug. In time it will run its course.â
âGet some rest then, and Iâll check on you later.â She turned toward the door, but Claraâs voice stopped her.
âKatie?â
âYes?â
âThanks for buying the caviar. It was nice of you.â
âNo problem.â She didnât think the utility company would be as sympathetic, but sheâd face that later. âYou concentrate on getting well.â
Katie left the room thinking this was the nicest Clara had been since she arrived at Candlelight. Too bad she had to be ill in order to behave herself. Katie passed the bathroom and heard someone being sick. Oh, please God, donât let anyone else come down with this, whatever it is . A moment later the door opened and Janet tottered out.
âI donât feel well, Katie. Do you think what Clara has is contagious?â
âItâs possible. Why donât you lie down, and Iâll have Tottie brew you a cup of peppermint tea to settle your stomach.â
âI donât think anything can settle my stomach. It feels like Iâve got a volcano rumbling around in there, and it just erupted.â
Katie grinned at Janetâs sense of humor, and then realized she was serious. âThat sounds terrible.â
âIt is. Just pray you donât get it.â
Janet staggered back to bed, and as Katie went to the kitchen, she hoped neither she nor Tottie got sick. Who would keep things running if they were down? Tottie glanced up when Katie entered the kitchen. âMeg is sick too.â
âOh, dear. Janet is too.â
âI can treat the others, but Meg should see a doctor. Sheâs looking pretty bad.â
âIâll take her to the clinic. Is she awake?â
âNo. She finally got to sleep around five.â Tottie rinsed a plate and placed it in the rack. âIt can wait until she wakes.â
Katie put a cup of water in the microwave, waited until the machine dinged, and dunked a peppermint tea bag in the cup. At Tottieâs questioning gaze, she shrugged. âThereâs nothing wrong with me. I just like the taste of it. I told Janet that Iâd bring her a cup.â
âYou sit down and drink your
