show,â Moira reminded them.
âThatâs right. The long-suffering siblings get to wash dishes offstage,â Patrick said.
âHey,â Colleen protested, âIâve got the kind of face they say can launch a thousand ships.â
âNaturally youâre invited to cook with us on camera,â Moira told her sister.
âThanks. Iâll have to check with my agent.â
âColleen Mary!â Katy said indignantly.
âJust kidding, Mum.â
âThat is a face that could launch a thousand shipsâ sis, â Danny told Colleen. âCongratulations. Iâm seeing it more and more every day now.â
âReally, Danny?â Colleen asked, her voice a little anxious. For a moment Moira reflected that her sister was really just a nice kid. She was doing exceptionally well, yet she was still amazed that people really thought her looks worthy of attention. She had managed to develop enough confidence to go forward and retain enough humility to remain grounded.
âReally. And Iâve heard from Patrick and your folks that thereâs a budding romance in the west?â
âJust budding,â Katy said firmly. âSo my daughter tells me.â
âAbsolutely just budding,â Colleen said, laughing. âMum, Iâd never get serious without bringing the poor guy home first and making sure he had the stamina for a real relationship.â
Patrick looked at his sister without the twitch of a smile. âUm, stamina?â
âHeâs a nice guy?â Danny asked. âNothing else would do for my, uh, baby sister.â
âThe nicest. Hey, you come to California now and then. Maybe youâll be out there soon. Iâd love for you to meet him.â
âDan can size him up for you just like that,â Patrick told her.
âColleen has a good head on her shoulders. Iâm sure heâs a fine fellow,â Danny said. âNow, as to Moiraâ¦â
âMoira and her Michael,â Katy said.
âHeâs great, Mum, and you know it,â Moira said.
âHe does seem decent,â Patrick acknowledged.
âHeâs a hunk,â Colleen said decisively.
âBeady eyes,â Danny said, shaking his head.
âOh, God, that again,â Moira said irritably.
âWell, I think his eyes are fine,â Katy said thoughtfully, taking the comment entirely literally.
âLook againâtheyâre beady,â Danny said, staring at Moira.
âFine, Iâll take another really good look at the man, Danny,â Katy said, setting strips of bacon into a huge frying pan with incredible precision, getting more bacon into the pan than Moira would have thought possible. âBut really, heâs courteous, and very handsome. And he does adore Moira.â
âYes, I guess he does,â Danny said grudgingly.
âA vote of approval at last?â Moira inquired.
âIâm withholding final judgment.â
âAnd heâs been so effusive with his comments regarding you,â Moira said.
âReally?â Danny asked.
âActually, no. He hasnât mentioned you at all.â
âWell, Iâm just an old family friend. Not a real member of the family who he needs to impress.â
âBut youâll definitely be on top of the guest list for the wedding,â Moira said over the rim of her coffee cup.
Her mother gasped. âMoira Kathleen!â
âNo, no, no, Mum,â she said quickly, with a sigh. She had to watch this sparring with Danny in front of her parents. âWeâre not planning anythingâyet.â
âI truly wish you every happiness,â Danny said. His eyes were steady on hers; his voice was sincere.
For some reason, that made her more irritated.
Maybe she didnât want him to be happy for her. Yup, that was it. Completely. She wanted him to be sorry heâd blown everything himself.
âThanks.â She forced herself to
