Night Hungers
girl. You will answer me. What will it take to make you leave this area never to return? I have plenty of money, and will have much more soon, very soon if you mind your own council.”
“And what makes you think I need money? I’ve everything I have right here, thank you very much. Whatever you want with the queen is none of my concern. I work for her, we aren’t friendly. So go bother someone else and leave me be.”
Zane put him to the back of her mind. He didn’t know who she was, he’d not said her name. There was power in a person’s name and she had his. She reached out to the one person she knew would do something with the information. Zane believed he’d do anything to keep his mate safe.
“Master? I’ve information for you. A being just contacted me to leave the area. He is after your mate and your realm. I can’t tell you his name without the permission of the queen. He is the one who shot your home.”
Zane could tell he was shocked. First, because she contacted him through a mental link without them exchanging blood and secondly, because of the information itself. She could feel him choosing his words carefully. It made her smile that he didn’t want to piss her off.
“And you know this how? Am I to assume that he asked you for something and that you didn’t give it to him? And why would I have to ask Mel for information that you have that I need?” Aaron asked her. Zane could hear the suspicion in his voice even through the link.
“Talk to the queen. I’m sure she’ll have no problem telling you anything you want to know about why I can’t help you. You should also know that he doesn’t know your name, or that of your mate. In the future, don’t talk to anyone unless they first say your name.
    Both of you.”
“Why? I have...ah, power. He can’t hurt me without my name. Or at least that’s the assumption. Thank you, my dear. I’m indebted to you.”
“Just take care of the babe, master. I’ve no need of another death upon my soul.”
Zane didn’t either. After doing this for as long as she had, there were many more than she wanted to account for.
Moving as slowly as she could Zane went into her bathroom, thankful for the weekend as she could laze about the house. Peeling off her torn t-shirt and pants, she looked at herself in the mirror.
Bruises and lacerations covered her body. Her legs were black and blue from her hips to her ankles. There was a long gash in her left thigh that still bled and another on her right calf. She didn’t remember what had put them there, but she knew they were fresh. The wound on her back where her kidney had been injured was black and at least a foot square in color. There were smaller cuts there as well. Not as bad as on her legs, but no less painful. The tear on her chest just below her breast was eight inches long and needed stitches. Her arms were also black and blue, but the cuts there were superficial.
Her jaw was bruised and her left eye was swollen completely shut. She would need more stitches in both of those areas as well. Not wanting to see anything else, she turned off the light and stepped into the steamy heat of the shower.
Zane’s night vision was excellent, so when the blood and grime began sluicing from her body she could see the river of redness as it circled around the drain.
Washing her hair Zane could feel several large and smaller bumps and cuts here and there. Her fingers found several of them and had her wincing from the pain. When she was finished scrubbing she let the hot water soothe her broken and battered body. She thought about the man, Aiden, and how he had received her pain.
Zane didn’t know why that had happened, and as soon as she’d realized that he’d felt it she’d blocked him. That had taken a great deal of energy to do, but she saw no reason for both of them to hurt like hell. Wondering if she could see if he had been bruised as well, she decided to touch him when she left her lair to find out.
