you can tell me where you were last Thursday morning around six oâclock, when Dennis Moreland was on his way to work.â
Back at Charter Lane, Tregalles sought out Molly. âYouâve seen Mrs Moreland,â he said. âWhatâs she like? Good looking, is she?â
âShe is as a matter of fact,â Molly said, âbut thatâs a strange question to be asking about a woman whoâs just lost her husband.â
âNo, no,â Tregalles protested, âitâs nothing like that. Itâs just that Morelandâs boss seems to have more than a passing interest in Morelandâs widow. In fact, if it werenât for the fact that there are witnesses who confirm where he was when Dennis Moreland disappeared, Iâd have brought the slimy little toad in for questioning. But what about Mrs Moreland? Whatâs your impression of her, Molly?â
âShe is a very attractive woman,â Molly agreed. âBut if youâre suggesting she might have been seeing someone else, I would doubt that very much.â
âCertainly not his boss, then. Heâs a fat slob, but there could have been others. I couldnât talk to all of the people Moreland worked with today, so Iâll try and catch the rest on Monday. Anyway, thatâs it for me, so Iâm off. See you, Molly.â
The sergeant was on his way out of the building when he was stopped by Gavin Whitelaw, the PC who had been at the scene where Billy Travis was killed. âGot a minute, Sarge?â he asked, then lowered his voice. âI just heard about the bloke they found out at Clapperton quarry. Theyâre saying it looks like the work of a serial killer, because itâs the same MO as Billy. Is that right?â
âThatâs right.â Tregalles glanced at his watch. Time was getting on and heâd told Audrey he would be home on time for dinner.
Whitelaw lowered his voice even further. âSame sort of thing carved in his forehead, was there?â
âThat information is still not being released,â Tregalles warned. He began to move away, but Whitelaw stopped him. âWas it an A like the first one?â he persisted.
âWhy are you so interested?â Tregalles asked. âDoes it mean something to you?â
Whitelaw raised his hands, palms outwards, and backed away. âNo, no, itâs nothing like that,â he said quickly. âItâs just that I keep seeing the way Billy looked out there. Canât get it out of my head, and now with another one . . .â He blew out his cheeks and flicked his head from side to side as if trying to clear it. âYou think he might strike again?â
âGod knows, but I hope not.â Tregalles eased past Whitelaw and was about to continue on his way, when he paused. âAnd the less said about
that
, the better,â he warned. âAll right?â
âRight!â Whitelaw said. âUnderstood.â
When Paget arrived, Ormside called Molly over. She repeated what she had told the sergeant, concluding by saying that if there was a connection between Dennis Moreland and Billy Travis, she hadnât been able to find it. âI had a look at several family photos,â she said, âbut I didnât see anything by Travis and son, and their wedding photos were done by a Ludlow photographer. Iâm just finishing up my notes now, if youâd like a copy before you go home, sir. Give me fifteen minutes?â
Paget looked at the clock, but Ormside spoke up before he could answer. âSuperintendent Pierce said sheâd like a progress report before you leave,â he said. âIn her office,â he added as Paget reached for the phone.
Paget put the phone down. âI donât know how long Iâll be,â he told Molly, âso leave a copy of your notes on Sergeant Ormsideâs desk, and Iâll pick it up on my way out.â
