graduation.
Almost everyone had been at a party at Josh Abramâs house and Jack had shown up with Ally Calder, a junior, and even though Tracey had broken up with Jack several weeks earlier at their prom, she still wasnât ready to see him with someone else, so sheâd grabbed Liamâs arm and pulled him away. âLetâs go,â sheâd whispered, and somehow theyâd ended up at the beach with a six-pack of beer and a pint of Peachtree.
âSo, Liam Tate,â sheâd teased as theyâd sat on the beach, âhow come you never asked me out?â
âBecause youâre Jackâs girl,â heâd answered, taking a sip of the sweet brandy.
âNot anymore,â sheâd said, reaching across him for the bottle, but heâd teasingly held it away from her and then, as sheâd leaned over him, laughing, their lips had met. âMmm, you taste peachy,â sheâd murmured.
âIf I remember correctly,â Tracey said with a smile, âyou were the one who held the bottle out of my reach.â
âThatâs because I thought youâd had enough.â
âYou were also the one who suggested going swimming.â
âI was just trying to cool things down,â Liam said innocently. âI planned on leaving my boxers on. You were the one who thought we should skinny-dip.â
âAre you sure it was me?â she teased.
âPositive.â
âWell, you have to admitâit was fun.â
âIt was,â Liam said, his eyes sparkling. And then his eyes grew solemn. âAnd yet, you still went back to him.â
âI did,â Tracey said with a sigh.
âI never understood why,â Liam said. âI thought we . . .â
She shook her head. âTaking Jack back was the biggest mistake of my life, but at the time, he was having second thoughts about enlisting and he begged me to wait for him . . . and then Desert Storm happened.â She paused. âI thought I was going to lose both the boys I loved.â
Liam shook his head. âMeanwhile, I get slammed twice in one year.â
Tracey searched his eyes. âIâve always loved you, Li. I still doâwe were so closeâas thick as thieves, but you were still hung up on Cadie . . . and that night, we were so drunk . . . I guess I felt like we were both on the rebound . . . and I didnât know if you were really interested in being with me.â
âYou couldâve asked. . . .â
âI shouldâve asked,â she said, searching his face. âI never regretted that night, though,â she said with a slow smile. âItâs one of my fondest memories.â
Liam half-smiled and looked around at the crowd. âWhere is Jack?â
âHe was feeling a little hung over too.â
âHe didnât come?â
She shook her head. âNo . . . so who knows what heâs up to.â
Liam frowned, seeing sadness in her eyes.
âThings arenât that great between us, Li.â
âYou seemed fine last night.â
She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. âHeâd kill me if he knew I was telling you this, but weâve been having trouble for years. Iâve tried everythingâweâve been to counselors and heâs been to a therapist, but itâs like the promise to be faithful has no meaning for him. Iâve threatened to leave him and he promises heâll change, and he does . . . for a while, but then he always goes back to his old ways.â
âHowâd you find out?â Liam asked, relieved that he didnât have to tell her.
âOh, an endless breadcrumb trail of the usual cluesâlate nights when heâs not where heâs supposed to be, text messages, e-mails, photos . . . and the original clueâlipstick on the collar.â
âIâm sorry, Trace,â Liam said.
She nodded. âIâve never told anyone this, Li, but he
