makeup.
Caitlyn went right to the counter and ordered a skinny vanilla latte with an extra shot of espresso. Stan ordered an iced coffee. Caitlyn pulled an American Express gold card out of her purse and handed it to the barista.
âIâm buying,â Stan began, but Caitlyn waved her off.
âItâs the least I can do for interrupting your weekend.... You can add fifty dollars for the Boys and Girls Club,â she told the young girl behind the counter with the silver hoop in her lip.
âYou rock! Thank you so much. Enjoy your drinks,â the girl said.
Stan raised an eyebrow. Caitlyn going to a charity-driven coffee shop? Her sister usually didnât concern herself with those in need. Not that she was mean or unfeelingâCaitlyn simply didnât think of many people but herself and her small circle. Then again, Stan hadnât really seen much of her in the past few years. Maybe sheâd had an epiphany and changed her ways.
Caitlyn didnât speak again until theyâd collected their drinks and retreated to a table in the back.
Stanâs cell vibrated. She checked the readout. Brenna. She felt another pang of homesickness, but pushed it aside. Sheâd have to call her later. She pressed Ignore and focused on her sister. âSo whatâs up? And howâd you know I was here?â
âI have a situation,â Caitlyn said, deflecting the question.
Stan sipped her iced coffee. Delicious, but made her miss Izzyâs gourmet coffee. Izzy Sweetâs Sweets in Frog Ledge was, next to McSwiggâs, her favorite place. âWhat kind of situation?â
Caitlyn fidgeted a bit in her seat. Sheâd never been good at cutting to the chase. âKyle McLeod,â she said finally.
Stanâs eyes widened. âThe chef?â
âYes.â
âThe same vegan chef from Florida whoâs supposed to be at this retreat with me?â
âYes,â Caitlyn said impatiently.
Stan tried to make the connection. âHow do you know Kyle McLeod?â
âWeâll get to that,â Caitlyn said. âThe important thing is, heâs missing. And I think heâs in trouble.â
Chapter 16
Stan stared at her sister, not quite sure how to respond. âForgive me for being dense, but Iâm not following you. Letâs back up to my first question. How do you know Kyle?â
It wasnât until the blush rose up her sisterâs neck, slowly turning her pale skin red, that she caught on. âCaitlyn.â
âWeâve been seeing each other,â Caitlyn said evenly. âAnd I donât want to hear it if youâre going to criticize me.â
Stanâs gaze dropped to her sisterâs left hand and the giant diamond ring and matching wedding band. Caitlyn curled her fingers defensively. âMichael and I . . . have been having problems for a while now.â
Donât judge. Do not judge. âOkay,â Stan said carefully. âWhere did you meet him?â
âHeâs been spending time in the area. Working with that weirdo chef guy.â
âSheldon Allyn,â Stan said.
âYeah. Him. Youâre working with him, too.â
âSheldon and I are working on a business plan,â Stan said. âBut I hadnât met Kyle or any of the other chefs before this weekend.â
Caitlyn nodded, running her finger around and around the top of her coffee cup lid. âKyleâs opening a new restaurant with him. Heâs been here looking at locations, working on menus, the whole nine. And teaching at Johnson and Wales one semester a year. Thatâs where I met him, a year or so ago. I took his basic cooking class.â She smiled wryly. âI thought I could get Michael interested in me again if I was a better cook. So lame, right?â
Stan felt sorry for her. âNot at all.â
âI found out later Kyleâs vegan. How funny is that? He wasnât thrilled about the menu
