to have to work late today. Catch up with everything I missed being in Washington. And that trip to Hackensackâs going to take a while. Can you mange without me this evening?â
Val relaxed instantly. âIâll manage,â she said.
âWant to go to Kitâs after school?â Rick asked. âI can tell Jamey to take you girls out to supper someplace nice.â
âNo, thatâs all right,â Val said. She finished her eggs and checked the time. âIâd better get going,â she declared. âI donât want to be late.â
âOne more thing,â Rick said. âI had a little talk with Bruno last night, about your walking home from Kitâs alone.â
âDaddy,â Val said. âIt was nothing.â
âBruno should know better than to let you do that,â Rick declared. âHe gets paid to keep an eye out on this family, and that includes seeing to it you arenât alone.â
âItâs my fault,â Val said. âI should have called him, and I just didnât want to. Kit walks home by herself all the time.â
âKit isnât a Castaladi,â Rick said.
Neither am I, Val wanted to say. âIâm sorry,â she said instead, getting up. âIt seemed like such a little thing.â
âItâs the little things that are dangerous,â Rick said.
Val shook her head. âIs Bruno going to stay by my side forever?â she asked. âIs he going to go to college with me?â
âIf you go to college, youâll go to one nearby,â her father declared. âSeton Hall, maybe. You think Iâm going to send you off to California somewhere, youâll live in a dorm and run around with nobody looking out for you?â
Val had given college no thought whatsoever until that moment. âYes,â she said. âThatâs exactly what I thought.â
âThen you thought wrong,â Rick said. âYouâll go to a good Catholic school Bruno can drive you to, and weâll find you a nice boy, and youâll get married. You and Michelle can go together, if that makes you feel better.â
âWhat if I want to go to school in California?â Val asked. âWhat if I donât want to get married? What if Michelle doesnât want to go to school with me?â
âDonât worry about Michelle,â Rick said. âSheâll want what we tell her to want.â
âFine,â Val said. âBut that doesnât help with my problems.â
âYouâll want what I tell you to want too,â Rick said. âI donât know whatâs going on with you, honey, but I hope you shake this mood off soon. Youâve always been such a good girl, just like your mama that way, and now youâre talking back to me and doing things you know you shouldnât. You got me worried.â
âItâs nothing, Daddy,â Val said. She was shaking with anger and fear. âIâd better go.â
âBrunoâs in the kitchen, waiting for you,â Rick said. âHave a nice day at school. I should be home before ten.â
âAll right,â Val said. She walked over to her father, and kissed him, because not to would have caused another scene. She went to the hall closet, got her jacket and her books, then walked to the kitchen. Bruno and Connie were finishing their breakfasts, but when Bruno saw Val, he pushed his mug of coffee aside, got up and opened the garage door for her.
Val followed him to the car, climbed into the back seat, and stared out the window as Bruno drove to school. She waited for him to give her a lecture, but he kept his mouth shut. She was grateful for the silence.
Michelle was waiting for her when the car arrived. âI know Rickâs back,â she said. âHe called Mama last night. She was hysterical all night after that.â
âShe shouldnât have been,â Val said. âI
