but he was in no hurry to reveal it.
The waitress put heaping mounds of rolls and corn bread in the center of the table.
âHere you go. Thereâs honey, butter, and jelly for the biscuits.â she set a bowl full of condiments on the table. âYour steaks will be out soon.â
âThanks,â Owen called.
âDarlinâ,â Ace said with a laugh.
Owen let out a loud guffaw and put a big glob of butter on a steaming biscuit. âso, Ace, are you single? Married? Divorced? surely a young man like yourself has a lady in his life.â
âIâm single. No lady to speak of.â He reached for a packet of strawberry jam.
Owen shook his head. âThatâs a shame.â
Steve laughed. âHeâs smart if you ask me.â
âNow, we all know youâd be lost without Amy. So donât you be givinâ us that stuff.â Owen wiped his mouth with a napkin and took another biscuit from the plate.
Steve grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners. âYou know it.â
âWell, what about you, Owen? I know that Steveâs married and getting ready to jet off to Europe, but havenât heard much about your story. Are you married?â Ace asked.
For a moment, a dark cloud came over Owenâs normally sunny face.
âNah.â He shook his head. âI was. We were together twenty years. She died nearly five years ago, though. Cancer.â He took a sip of tea. âIt was the hardest thing Iâve ever been through.â
âIâm sorry, man.â Ace knew from losing Caroline how hard it was to lose someone important to you. But to lose someone youâd built a life with must be terrible.
âThanks. At first, I didnât know how Iâd get through. But as they say, time heals.â
âHere you go, gentlemen.â The waitress set thick steaks and foil-wrapped baked potatoes in front of each of them. âDig in.â
Ace said a silent blessing for the food then bit into the best steak heâd ever had. âMan, Owen, you were sure right about this place.â
âStick with me, boy. I wonât steer you wrong.â
âHey, Ace,â Steve said in a voice so casual it couldnât have been an accident, âdo you and Kristy get along?â
Ace frowned. Unfortunately, the blond still saw him as an enemy. But for his part, they got along. âI guess we do. Why?â
âNo reason. Except that I saw you on her porch earlier today while I was out on patrol.â
âOh. Yeah, her dog had gotten out, and I was returning him. Not a big deal.â
âI just wondered. You know, the two of you are about the same age.â Steve wiggled his bushy gray eyebrows in Aceâs direction.
âNow, you know sheâs in no state to be dating,â Owen piped up rather protectively. âBesides, they work together, so that wouldnât be a good idea.â
Steve laughed. âOwen thinks heâs her daddy,â he explained to Ace. âSheâs been working here so long, weâve practically seen her grow up.â
âIâm just worried about her is all,â Owen said defensively. âBesides, there was some guy out today on one of her programs that had her all riled up. I saw them talking after it was over. And it wasnât long afterward that she went home with a headache.â He cut another bite of steak and swished it through the sauce before popping it into his mouth. âShe mightâve fooled Hank, but I saw those tears in her eyes.â
Ace remembered the look on her face when sheâd stepped onto her porch that afternoon. Heâd known then that sheâd been crying. That mask hadnât fooled him. But he figured sheâd just have to get through it on her own. And as Owen had said, time heals.
âIâm pretty sure you donât need to worry about Kristy and me dating,â Ace said. âBut if you have any other prospects, send
