was asking more along the lines of what about how you
feel
about Rikki?â
Blain lowered his gaze and studied the plastic cup in his hand. âI donât know about that, either. Sheâs a complicated subject.â
Rory grinned. âA dangerous subject. You might need to walk away once youâre done with this case.â
âWorried about me, Preacher?â
âNope.â Rory found a piece of cold pizza. âJust...bemused. I havenât seen you so besotted before.â
âWho says Iâm besotted?â
Alec laughed. âRikki is a beautiful woman. Mysterious and under pressure right now. Youâre one of the good guys.â
âYour point?â
âIt all adds up to trouble,â Alec finished. âSheâll turn to you and youâll do the right thing. Just be careful.â
âI thought you had already vouched for her,â Blain said.
âI did on a professional basis. And I like Rikki. But youâve always avoided getting tangled in a relationship so itâs different seeing you so tangled up in this one.â
Blain got up and tossed his cup in the trash. âI kind of miss Hunter. The Okie doesnât badger me the way you two do.â He shrugged. âHe must be deep undercover. Heâs not returning my calls.â
âHunter
is
on assignment,â Rory replied. âI guess Iâd better throw in a prayer for him, too. Being a private eye is a whole new set of concerns.â He chuckled. âEspecially when Hunterâs idea of finding answers is to inflict physical pain.â
âSeveral concerns,â Alec retorted. âBut he was special ops. He does that thingââ
âSlips around without a sound?â Rory asked, grinning.
Alec glanced back over his shoulder. âYeah, that thing.â
âHeâll show up, hopefully for your wedding,â Rory said, glancing at Alec.
âI hope my best man shows up, too,â Alec quipped, grinning at Blain.
âIâll be there, okay.â Blain decided heâd had enough. âIâm beat. Think Iâll head home.â
Rory lifted his hand. âHey, we didnât mean to get too personal.â
Alec chimed in. âItâs your business, buddy. I should know to trust you since youâre good at your job.â
Blain nodded. âI know you mean well. But you both need to remember something about me. I may be a bit besotted, but Iâm not stupid.â
Rory bobbed his head. âAnd stay not stupid, okay?â
âAlways.â
He waved to them and headed down to the open garage underneath the house on stilts. He wasnât stupid but he had to make sure Rikki was all right. Did that make him crazy?
Probably.
He got his phone out and hit her number. He didnât like the way theyâd left things. Theyâd been through a lot together since the night heâd seen her on the boardwalk.
And she had to still be reeling from what had happened this morning. He told himself checking on her was the right thing to do.
Just in case she needed someone to talk to tonight.
* * *
Rikki wished she had someone to talk to. Sheâd been so tired by the dayâs events sheâd come to her room right after dinner, taken a hot shower and was now trying to read. Pebble lay spread out in a long cat stretch by her feet. Rikki had tried telling her tale to the cat, but Pebble had become so bored heâd taken to licking his paws and grooming himself.
A sure sign of total disregard.
Her mother, always her first source and the best confidante a girl could have, was sleeping. And even if she were awake, Rikki couldnât bother her mother when she was so sick. If Sonia knew what was going on, sheâs worry even more.
But then, Sonia Alvanetti never seemed to worry about anything. Her faith held tight against so many things.
Rikki thought of Tessa. Her best friend. Gone. Theyâd never get to stay up late
