Ross.â
âIâve also been worrying about you.â
âYou donât have to worry about me.â
âOh, but I do.â
They ate cold roast beef and hot mustard sandwiches and drank water. The evening was so still and delicious, so very relaxing compared to the drama waiting for her at home.
âI should get backâ¦â She was lying on her back, staring up at an orange sky, inhaling the scent of grass, listening to the sounds of the horses behind them. Ross was so at ease beside herâand sheâd never felt more at home with another person.
She looked over to him, to the face that had taken her breath away for so long now, and he was there, staring back and smiling.
A person, Annika reminded herself, who barely knew herâand if he didâ¦
If she closed her eyes, even for a moment, she knew she would remember his kiss, knew where another kissmight lead, right here, where the air was so clear she could breathe, the sky so orange and the grass so cool.
âI should get back,â she said again. She didnât want to, but staying would be far too dangerous.
âYou donât have to go,â Ross said.
âI think I do,â was her reluctant reply. âRoss, itâs too soon.â
âAnnika, you are welcome to stay. Iâm not suggesting a weekend of torrid sex.â Low in her stomach, something curled in on itself. âThough of courseâ¦â he grinned ââ¦that can be an optional extraâ¦â And then he laughed, and so too did she. âThereâs a spare room, and youâre more than welcome to use it. If you want a break, a bit of an escape, hereâs the perfect place for it. I can go and stay at the flat if you preferâ¦â
âYouâd offer me your home?â
âActually, yes!â Ross said, surprised at himself, watching as she turned on her phone again and winced at the latest flood of incoming messages. âHell, I canât imagine what you have to go home to.â
âA lot,â Annika admitted. âI have kept my phone off all day.â
âYou can keep it off all weekend if you like.â
Oh, she could breatheânot quite easily, but far more easily than she had all day.
âI donât want to stay here alone.â
âThen be my guest,â he said.
âI have a shift at the nursing home tomorrow night.â
âIâm not kidnapping youâyouâre free to come and go,â Ross replied, and after a moment she nodded.
âIâd love to stay, but I should let Aleksi know.â
She rang her brother, and Ross listened as she checked if he was okay and reassured him that she was fine.
âIâm going to have my phone off,â Annika said. âTell Mum not to worry.â
He busied himself packing up the picnic, but he saw her run a worried hand through her hair.
âNo, donâtâbecause Iâm not there,â she said. âIâm staying with a friend.â She caught his eye. âNo, Iâd rather not say. Just donât worry.â
She clicked off her phone and stood. Ross called the horses, and they walked them slowly back.
âItâs nice,â Annika said. âThisâ¦â She looked over to him. âDo your grandparents have horses?â
âThey do.â
And heâd so longed for Spain, longed for his native land, yearned to discover all that had seemed so important, so vital, but right now he had it all here, and the thought of Spain just made him homesick.
Homesick for here.
Â
It was relaxing, settling the horses for the night, then heading back to his house.
âHave a bath,â Ross suggested.
âI have nothing to change into. Maybe I should drive back and pack. I havenât got anything.â
âYou donât need anything,â Ross said. âMy sisters always leave loads of stuffâthey come and stay with the kids some weekends when Iâm
