brain and stressed her out, worrying whether or not sheâd get home from work in time to pick Lacy up from day care. Compared to worrying about Lacy, manual labor was a cinch.
âDo you mind if Lacy and I leave the diner before closing tomorrow?â
Her uncle looked up from grill he was scraping. âSure thing. Have you got a date?â
The look on her face must have been priceless, because he started laughing deep, belly laughs.
âNo, but I thought Iâd head on over to the Circle G ranch and see if I canât talk a certain cowboy into keeping his promise to my little girl.â
Her uncle looked over his shoulder to where theyâd left Lacy and nodded. âMight be a good idea, else little June bug just might start asking one of my regulars to drive her out there.â
Danielle laughed despite her uneasiness discussing Jesse. âSheâs pretty obvious.â
âLike her mommaâwith a one-track mind.â
Danielle smiled. âYou could always figure out a personâs motives five minutes after meeting them.â Trusting her uncle to tell her the truth she asked, âDo you think Jesse is like Buddy?â
Her uncle emptied the griddleâs grease trap and wiped his hands on a towel. âIn some ways yes, in others, no.â
âGreat.â She walked over to where Lacy stood looking out the window. She didnât think her daughter noticed her, so she was surprised when Lacy turned and asked, âDo you think heâll âmember about his promise?â
âIt takes a lot of time and hard work to keep a ranch going,â Uncle Jimmy said. âThere is the herd to take care of and the horses that they use when working the herd.â
âHow come you know so much âbout ranching, Unca Jimmy?â
He smiled. âIâve lived in Pleasure most of my life and have friends that took over the running of their familyâs ranch.â
Lacy was quiet on the ride home and went to the living room to watch television rather than keep them company in the kitchen. In between rolling out crust and worrying about broken promises, Danielle tiptoed down the hallway. As sheâd hoped, Lacy had fallen asleep. Since she looked comfortable, she let her be.
âShe all right?â
âYes. I just wish Jesse had kept his promise and stopped by.â
âWell now, Iâd say that maybe you and my favorite grandniece are a mite impatient.â
âUncle Jimmyââ
âDonât Uncle Jimmy me,â he said, brushing the flour from his hands. âIâm not pleased that he didnât call to explain himself, and will have something to say to him if and when he shows up, but sometimes emergencies happenâespecially out on a ranch.â
âMaybe youâre right,â she admitted. âThere might be a perfectly good reason why he didnât show up.â
By the time heâd put the last batch of pies in the oven, Danielle was washing the last of the mixing bowls when Lacy wandered back in. âCan I help?â
âYouâre just in time to help us decide what to fix for dinner.â
âHamburgers!â
âSure,â Uncle Jimmy answered.
âLacy and I can make Grammaâs short-cut baked beans.â
Her uncle smiled. âThat would be great. Iâve got some canned pork and beans in the pantry. What else do you need?â
Danielle wished sheâd thought to unpack her file box of recipes; now sheâd have to recreate it from memory. âOnion, butter, and brown sugar.â
âNo chili powder?â
She grinned. âDad canât eat hot spices anymore, so Mom adapted her recipe so he could eat it.â
âDo you need any help?â
âItâs our turn to wait on you.â She wondered if she and Lacy would have coped as well if they didnât have Uncle Jimmy. âHow about if you take a break and go on out to the back porch?â
