off the chain. That girl most probably will give him her number. And Iâll most probably be mad, but I wonât admit it to anyone but you, so keep your trap shut!
âDang, will yâall just go together for heavenâs sake?â Kevin asks. âIâm sick of the suspense.â
âWhat kind of suspense?â Candy asks.
âAll while weâre planning Giaâs party, heâs asking me if I think Gia likes him for real. Iâm like, dude! She likes you, man. Why wouldnât she like you?â
I lean forward in my chair and drop my fry. âHe asked you that for real?â
âYeah, and I know Iâm breaking all kind of man law and friendship codes telling you this, but Iâm sick of you two.â
Hope grins. âSo, Gia, what are you gonna do about it?â
âIâm not doing anything! My mom told me that the boy is supposed to make the first move.â
âTechnically, he made the first move when he bought you that bracelet,â Candy says.
âNah, because he said that he and his mother picked it out. Even if she did help him, it would only be a first move if he claimed he chose it all by himself.â
Hope shakes her head with frustration. âThere she goes, making up random rules.â
âI know, right!â Candy exclaims. âThat was totally random. And this is about to be, too: Kevin, will you be my escort for the cotillion?â
âSeriously?â
âYeah, seriously. Youâre kinda cute, and this is a church thing and all, so yeah.â
Kevinâs smile touches both of his ears. Oh, brother. âThank you, Candy! Of course, Iâll be your escort. What color are we wearing?â
Candy laughs. âDang, Kevin, itâs not the prom. All of the ladies are wearing white dresses, and Mama Gwen says youâll need a tux.â
âYou already told my mom you were asking Kevin?â I ask.
âYep. She was cool with it. Who are you asking, Hope?â
âBrother Bryan.â
âBrother Bryan, the choir director?â I ask, a little bit salty I didnât think of him first. Heâs super duper fine.
âYes,â Hope replies. âMy mom says it doesnât have to be a boy, but it could be a man that we admire, like an uncle or cousin. I really admire Brother Bryan and he mentors us.â
Candy and I give Hope the serious blank stare. âAll right!â she says. âHeâs ridiculously cute, too!â
âThe real reason comes out!â I say.
Ricky drops his tray on the table and plops into his seat. âThe real reason for what?â
âFor why Hope asked Brother Bryan to be her escort to the PGP cotillion.â
Ricky scrunches up his nose. âI donât think Brother Bryan is gonna go on a date with a little girl, much less the pastorâs daughter.â
âFirst of all, Iâm not a little girl! Second, itâs not a date! Heâs just escorting me. Anyway, who are you asking, Gia?â
I shrug, even though everybody at the table knows that I want Ricky to be my escort. I hate being set up like this. Iâll ask him when I get ready, if I get ready.
âGia, you want me to take you?â Ricky asks.
Or, Iâll wait until he asks me!
âThat would be cool, I guess.â
Hope rolls her eyes, and gets up from the table to send a text message. An uncomfortable silence settles on the table, as if Candy and Kevin are expecting something more. But Ricky and I just play it cool and keep munching on our fries.
Thatâs how we do.
âSeriously?â Candy asks. âYâall get on my nerves.â
Candy gets up from the table and marches toward Hope.
âWhatâs wrong with her?â Ricky asks.
I give the clueless shrug. âI have no clue.â
My phone buzzes in my purse. âSomeoneâs texting me.â
