woman gave herself to him so readily,
and with no reservations at all. From her words and actions this past week,
culminating in the last few hours of passionate lovemaking, he realised that
he'd found the person who was the missing piece in the jigsaw of his life.
He lay back on the pillow, staring at the ceiling and
wondering if it was possible for this new bond between them to strengthen, and
their relationship to grow stronger over the coming days and weeks.
There was of course one obstacle to their happiness.
This was her husband, who they'd last heard hard at work in
Joyce's bed earlier that evening. He was more than aware that it was not for
the first time Grant had enjoyed himself in her arms, and not just recently,
but over an extended period some years earlier, when he was still a teenager.
Cyril spent the next hour or so considering all the
alternatives that tonight's pairing of the two very different couples offered.
A large, contented smile spread across his broad face, as his ideas
consolidated into a firm plan. He went over each step in his mind for the final
time, and with a nod of satisfaction, he turned on his side, wrapped his arm
around April and was soon asleep.
CHAPTER 16
The days grew into weeks as the household settle into its
new patterns. The next morning, after April and Cyril's first night together,
each person came down to breakfast at at different time, and then set about
their daily duties. Grant and Cyril left early for their separate offices,
while later April busied herself in the kitchen, listening with some
apprehension at Joyce going repeatedly from room to room upstairs.
Her worry was without foundation, because when Joyce came
into the kitchen an hour later, she smiled broadly at April and said, "I've
been rearranging things upstairs. I've moved Grant's clothes into the empty
wardrobes in my room, and I've taken the liberty of putting all your things in
Cyril's room."
Joyce looked at April's reddening face as she collapsed into
a kitchen chair and said, "It was going to happen sooner or later my dear, and
I think it's best to be open about these things – it's for the best, don't you
agree?"
April was quite sure whether she was to agree to her being
open about the affairs, or whether she was agreeing they would have happened
one day, anyway. Happy that Joyce was taking it all so calmly, and relieved
that her feeling of guilt had completely disappeared, she nodded her agreement.
"Fine, well let's have a nice cup of tea together, and plan
our shopping spree!"
At dinner that evening, the seating arrangements were
different by unspoken agreement. Grant sat alongside Joyce, while April sat
close to Cyril on the other side of the table. The conversation was light, but
pleasant enough, and watching television in the sitting room later they took
their usual seats; April and Cyril on the sofa opposite the fireplace, while Grant
and Joyce sat opposite each other in deep armchairs.
At about 9:30 that evening Cyril stretched his arms and
stood up. "It's been a long day, so I think I'll forgo the chess tonight and
retire early." He turned to April and held out his hand, which she grasped with
tight relief. "Goodnight," he said to Joyce and Grant, while April, who seemed
unable to speak, simply nodded at each of them.
The door was hardly shut before Joyce was across the room,
sitting on Grant's lap and flinging her arms around his neck. "You were
wonderful this evening, my darling, and I love you so much." Her lips fastened
on his, and in seconds their pulses raced as their fervent kissing raised
passions and lust that had no place in a respectable sitting room.
She slid off his lap and went over to the sideboard as she
said, "I don't think we'll follow them straight upstairs – what do you think?"
She saw him nod so she continued, "I agree; much better to let them settle in
first. Meanwhile, I'll pour us a couple of drinks."
