at all. And there was no way she could ask him to throw Tanya and Trent an engagement party. She knew Max and the higher-ups at the UBC had a whole plan about when Trent and Tanya could date each other, but she was pretty sure they never factored in marriage. But then again . . . maybe they would be happy about it. A big splashy wedding could be excellent for publicity. It all depended on how Corliss spun it for Max . . .
Corliss decided sheâd figure it out later. âSure, Tanya. Iâll tell Maxâand somehow ask him about a party. Consider it my first wedding gift to you.â
Tanya looked confused. âDoes that mean you arenât going to buy me an expensive present? Iâve already registered at Tiffanyâs.â
Before Corliss could answer Tanyaâs latest whopper, her phone rang. She scrambled for it in her bag and saw that it wasâMax. âHey, Max,â Corliss said, answering it. âWere your ears ringing?â
âWhy would my ears be ringing, Corliss?â Max replied in his most humorless tone.
âUm, itâs a saying? Like when people are talking about you?â
âCorliss, I canât entertain your cryptic form of communication this morning. I need you in my trailer ASAP.â
âRighto, Herr Captain. Iâm on my way.â She hung up and hugged Tanya hard. âIâm really happy for you guys.â
Tanya hugged her back. âThanks, Cor. Youâre the best! But wait a second,â she said, pulling away from Corliss. âWere you on a date with JB at the Emmys last night or what?â
âMe and JB? Ha! Thatâs funny!â Corliss was suddenly shouting. âNaw, weâre just friends. F-R-I-E-N-D-S!â
âCor, I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I certainly know how to spell friends .â Tanya made her pouty face. âWell, thatâs too bad. You two would make a pretty cute couple.â
âYa think so? Never crossed my mind,â Corliss said, standing up, pulling herself together, and heading out of the closet. She didnât want to engage Tanyaâor anyone in the castâabout JB until she knew exactly what was going on between them. âIâll talk to Max, donât you worry. Itâs totally amazing you and Trent are getting married, Tanya.â She suddenly meant it. âTwo people like each other not just enough to dateâbut to spend their entire lives together!â The thought blew Corlissâs mind.
Maxâs Trailerâ9:46 A.M.
âWhat is it, Max?â said Corliss, whoâd jogged all the way from Tanyaâs condo. âI didnât think youâd be in until later. What with the Emmys and all last night.â Corliss wondered if heâd read The âBu-hoo yet this morning. She gritted her teeth and hoped he hadnât.
There were deep rings around Maxâs eyes. âPlease donât mention last night, Corliss. I was up until 4 A.M. with Mingmei Rothstein discussing our astrological signs and trying to find excuses why I couldnât give her a full-body massage.â
âYikes.â
âAnd this morning I come into the office to find even more bad news.â He opened his jar of painkillers, popped a few, and crunched them.
Corliss winced as Max crunched. âNothing about any one of our stars, I hope?â
He gave her a desperate look. âNot unless you consider Legend one of them.â
Corliss sighed. âUh, not exactly.â She felt terrible that she still hadnât been able to find a nanny for Legend. His presence always seemed to weigh on Max in a way Corliss didnât really understand. Then again, she never had to take care of a hyperactive preschooler with an unhealthy interest in bodily functions. âWhat is it this time, Max?â
âHe egged the camerawomanâs Subaru Outback.â He pointed out the window of his trailer in the direction of the carnage. Sure
